Another consequence of #Russia's war on #Ukraine...
The pernicious infections infiltrating Ukraine’s front lines
Doctors and scientists are waging a shadow war in the besieged nation: bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics. The deadly bugs are now knocking on western Europe’s door.
By Richard Stone 10.02.2025
Excerpt: "The worst of these drug-resistant strains 'no longer respond to some of the most powerful antibiotics available,' says Luise Martin, a pediatrician and infectious disease specialist at Charité University Hospital in Berlin who helps to manage antimicrobial stewardship at the facility. And the invasion of Ukraine stands to add fuel to the fire.
"Aided by European allies and the United States, Ukrainian health authorities are trying to tackle what appears to be the root cause of the multidrug resistance: a breakdown in infection control and prevention in overwhelmed casualty wards. Exacerbating that is a longstanding misguided practice by some doctors at trauma units of conserving supplies by prescribing low doses of antibiotics." [Like, what else are you going to do if SUPPLIES ARE RUNNING OUT! smh]

Um, since cavities haven't been a problem for me (I've had just one), I think I'll switch back to using baking soda and peroxide again (with my own dried mint if I want mintiness).
Some Tom's of Maine toothpaste may be contaminated with #HarmfulBacteria, FDA says
#FDA's warning about multiple types of bacteria and "a black mold-like substance" found in a facility that makes #TomsOfMaine toothpaste has consumers worried about a possible recall.
November 20, 2024
"A recent inspection of a Tom's of Maine facility found 'significant violations' that included different types of bacteria detected in the water and the company's toothpaste, as well as a '#BlackMold-like substance' located behind a water storage tank, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
"The FDA determined the company's response to its findings was 'inadequate' and called for a 'thorough review of all #microbiological hazards,' according to a letter sent by the agency to the brand's parent company, Colgate-Palmolive.
"An inspection in May of a facility in #SanfordMaine, discovered the bacteria #PseudomonasAeruginosa in #water used to manufacture Tom’s Simply White Clean Mint Paste and to clean equipment. The bacteria can cause infections in the blood, lungs and urinary tract, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"The letter also stated that there were multiple incidents of finding a bacteria called #RalstoniaInsidiosa in water in the facility. A third type of bacteria, #ParacoccusYeei, was found in the finished product of the company's Wicked Cool! Anticavity Toothpaste, per the FDA. The type of Paracoccus yeei found can cause infection that may be resistant to #antibiotics.
"An FDA inspector also found 'a black mold-like substance' at the base of a hose reel behind a water storage tank within one foot of stainless-steel pails used to manufacture the toothpaste, according to the letter. 'Powder residues' were also seen in a stainless-steel tray next to a batch of #TomsSillyStrawberryAnticavity toothpaste.
"The company told the FDA that the room was thoroughly cleaned to remove the black substance and the powder residue, but the FDA called for more to be done."
