  3. #Neandertals made #antibacterial ointment, but may not have known it

Yet another case of casting doubt on the intelligence and observational powers of our ancestors.

Could you have figured out how to make birch Tar or oil, or even started the fire needed to extract it.

If they had been as stupid and ignorant as modern man we would have died out many years ago.

  4. #Neandertals made #antibacterial ointment, but may not have known it
Neandertals burned birch bark to create a tar that they used to attach stones to weapons and other tools. In modern human cultures, birch tar is used medicinally. Indigenous peoples in the Arctic incorporate it into wound dressings, and the Mi’kmaq, or L’nuk, peoples in Canada use birch bark extract to fight skin infections. These products kill bacteria that cause staph & MRSA.

  8. Y'all, this is an ex-Californian-current-Floridian talking... There's SO MUCH in #flood water that is so bad for you - including in many states - fauna (#snakes, #gators, #pythons - yes, I know: snakes but HUGE!) that can do major damage to you!

Stay out of #floodwater - and if you HAD to wade through it - take a shower and use #antibacterial soap or body-wash!

  10. #Dianthus is a key #herb used in #Chinese #TraditionalMedicine aka #TCM to treat #urinary difficulties. In #Western #HerbalMedicine, the entire plant is used as a bitter tonic herb that stimulates urinary system & #digestive systems. #DianthusChinensis is classified as #antibacterial, #diuretic, #emmenagogue & #febrifuge.

  11. Researchers have identified a combination of existing #cancer drugs that may improve treatment for #tuberculosis. Repurposed drugs enhanced delivery of #antibacterial medications that target tuberculosis-causing #bacteria. Although it is often overlooked in industrialized countries such as the United States, tuberculosis remains one of the deadliest diseases.

  12. Caveats with #TeaTree -- make sure it's fresh! It turns into a turpentine-like substance if too old. Also, some folks with sensitive skin should avoid Tea Tree, and don't use it for items for your pets (especially cats!)

Make Your Own #LaundryDetergent with Tea Tree + Rosemary

by Lindsey Johnson, January 18, 2018

"The tea tree [and rosemary] has antimicrobial properties, which is nice for laundry, and both the essential oils help cut the strong scent of the soaps. For a completely natural laundry soap, use grated vegetable oil based soap, like Dr. Bronner's castile bars."

Yet in the first year of the #pandemic, primary care physicians prescribed #antibacterial #medications twice as frequently as before, report researchers at the University of Basel. A risky practice, warns the research team.

    2/2 #HandHygiene #HandWashing

It is important to note… "Use of #antibacterial soap showed little added benefit compared with use of nonantibacterial #soap."

Take home: There is NO need to add antibacterial agents to soap for basic #InfectionControl at home or in public places. More important that that you "just DO it" [wash your hands] than choosing a brand/formula of soap.

    …and...

"Hand hygiene is clearly effective against #gastrointestinal and, to a lesser extent, #respiratory infections."

Take home: This makes sense! #GI #infections are typically "fecal/oral" (I don't have to go into what that means!). The hands are the most likely route of infection. Wash them!

#Influenza can be transmitted by touching surfaces. #COVID19 less so. So again the above makes sense.

    Hope this Helps!

  17. Three native bees gorging on the pollen of a pig face flower (Carpobrotus Edulis) - spotted yesterday on Teewah beach! Not only are the fruits of this plant edible (albeit pretty salty!) The juice from its succulent leaves has a couple of interesting medicinal properties: it can help treat sunburn, minor cuts, insect bites, stings, and even jellyfish burns! Given its preferred habitat of sand dunes and beach areas, this knowledge might come in handy one day. It also has antibacterial properties and can be used to treat minor mouth infections or a sore throat when mixed with water and used as a gargle. Are you growing pigface in your garden yet?

  18. @rose_myrtle

Same with #antiBacterial waterTreatments like #Dettol.

Generally speaking, due to #govtProtections one doesn't need to add products to tapWater in most if not all Australian cities to wash an open #wound to prevent #infection. TapWater will do the job.

In fact we've seen adding too much antibacterial can damage #skin around the wound and retard normal #regeneration / repair.

Whether the #water is drinkable is another story.
