I was delighted to hear Astra Taylor bring up #anthropocentrism - I have long held the theory that our #speciesist/human-supremacist approach to life on earth is the slippery slope that supports the categorisation and "othering" of humans based on race, religion and nationality. To put it in #carnist terms, once you develop a taste (for othering), you can't stop.

We’re only at the beginning of discovering the #animal roots of #language. But one thing that we can’t ignore² anymore is the Logos was not given exclusively to #humanity. #Anthropocentrism can now survive only through voluntary ignorance. Reality is there for all to see. This article reports on informal community efforts to care for non-human animals during and after the 2019/2020 “Black Summer” bushfires in Australia, when over three billion animals were killed, injured, or displaced."

human communities understood and treated non-human animals as part of their communities; humans went to extraordinary lengths to care for and rescue animals; these efforts were largely invisible to, and unsupported—even condemned—by formal emergency management agencies. We conclude that human-centric emergency and disaster management policies are at odds with community values and behaviors. We argue that disaster management must evolve to accommodate and support the realities of community-based rather than individual-based approaches, and must simultaneously expand to consider communities as multispecies."

It’s much easier for #anthropocentrism to simply not consider out-group sentients. Just ignore them. Don’t even reference them. Unthinkingly assume only (some?) humans matter. The scope is already set.

Because explicitly morally excluding out-group sentients is unjustifiable.

And once you include some of them... you have to include them all 💚

A lot of vegan social media posts are of junk food. If you say so, a pile-on ensures you're rapidly 'educated' that veganism is for the animals; it's not about health. Apparently, humans aren't animals these days, and diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are not suffering.
