"It's Okay to Be a Solitary Bee": a free zine all about solitary bees with beautiful watercolour illustrations! https://magaro.net/tles/portfolio/its-okay-to-be-a-solitary-bee/

The burrowing bees are so cute. They'll sit right at the entrance of their holes and, when you pass by, immediately retreat. However if you wait patiently they'll come back up again.
I thought I also saw immense bees buzzing around, but they turned out to be furry scarab beetles of some kind!

the females—there seemed to be only a few, maybe only one very popular one—are golden rather than silver, and very slightly broader in build. periodically one saw a little "bee ball" with a female and at least one male rolling around the dusty, sunny slope.
i don't know what family they are—Andrenidae? Colletidae?—anyway, some kind of solitary ground-nesting bee.

@kristiedegaris "drystone also provides a home for many animals, insects and plants, with each wall containing a diverse ecosystem." – so true. One of my favourite pastimes is to walk along drystone walls in a Mediterranean island on a fine Summer day and spot the many solitary native bees that make their homes there into the little cracks. A few examples from Crete, Greece:

Bees still up and about in Cambridge's Botanic gardens, UK.
Heriades sp., a small mason bee. These bees transport pollen under their abdomens rather than on leg baskets.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/239341832Colletes sp., a celophan bee.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/239258494Bombus sp., a bumblebee. This likely aged individual has lost its coloration and appears black and white.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/239342271Unknown bee, possibly in the family of sweat bees.

At least I saw a lot of cool bugs. Here are 4 orders of insects:
- Orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets, katydids, etc.)
- Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths)
- Hemiptera (true bugs)
- Hymenoptera (ants, wasps, bees, sawflies)iNat is being a butt right now so can't narrow it down much.

The Autumn Joy sedum (_Hylotelephium telephium_) at Christie Pits is positively mobbed by all kind of bees! Most just feeding, but _Anthidium_ wool carder bees were also mating.

Last day/hours for City Nature Challenge!
I'm not attending any scheduled events today. But I'll be bopping by Brooklyn Bridge Park's Pier 1. Perfect weather for a Bee Quest for Habropoda laboriosa, Blueberry Digger Bee.

Stopped by Christie Pits on my way back from a dentist appointment today. Wasn't really expecting to find much given how much foot traffic and how little "wild" space there is, but to my astonishment there were a few different kinds of bees making burrows in sandy patches on the sunny hillside!
There were fluffy white-and-black mining bees (skittish, hard to get photos) and smaller, more docile metallic olive-green sweat bees.

Right now, the sunny, sandy slopes in High Park, Toronto are dotted with the burrows of cellophane bees (_Colletes_). The bees are shy and will duck back into their burrows when they see you approach, but after a few minutes they will poke their heads out again.

A disturbing observation: The first bumble bee of the year. This is a month earlier than the previous earliest I've seen in my garden.

Cute bee. Hard to get how small this is. For scale, it's smaller than the single Allium/onion flower it's dangling from.
I also just like the main photo.

Okay, for #WorldBeeDay, for real, my happiest bee discovery this year was seeing and learning about cellophane bees, _Colletes_.

It's a warm, sunny day after soaking rains eartlier this week. That means it's time for my cellophane bees to emerge in force!
This is my 16th year of observing this population in my garden. I'm always excited to see "my little bees".
Here's my blog post from the first year I noticed them, in 2008.

In nearly every hole there was a little miner bee! Most were very shy and would immediately scoot back down the burrow, lol. But I soon found that by putting the camera at the right distance and waiting for them to come back out, I could get close-ups.
LOOK AT THESE CUTE FUCKING BEES
