It is pretty exciting - seeing #ANPR outside of malls, but so bloody weird for them to even invest in something like this when it's so clearly stated and reiterated that we're moving towards implementing #MLFF tolls nation-wide. They even had to create a whole new mobile app just for this test.
This only tells me that they're not confident that MLFF would be deployed 'live' any time soon in this country, which is... totally plausible, OR these highway concessionaires are just too bloody rich and have too much money on their hands - which is the likeliest candidate. But meh, the answer's prolly both.

Build an Automatic Number Plate Recognition system in 7 steps! Detect vehicles, read plates, & classify origins. Great tutorial for #ComputerVision & #AI enthusiasts! #ANPR #MachineLearning

A great deal of #LLM and #AI is indeed hype and bullshit, but there's *many* basic #surveillance tasks (mostly pattern matching, and monitoring deviations from normal behaviour) that basic algorithms can very easily process quicker than humans, and feed their findings to humans for such purposes as #traffic #law enforcement - already #Australia and #UK are working together on "AI" enabled #CCTV cameras with #ANPR monitoring, that can detect not only #speeding but illegal use of #mobile phones and possible #DUI or defective vehicles (such as where the driver is having difficulty staying in correct lane)
-
I'm both impressed and slightly unnerved with how quickly I got used to the extra power of the #VW #GolfGTI - within a week of getting it it felt to some extent like "an ordinary #car" from inside during normal driving (unless I put my foot down, when the performance becomes immediately obvious. I suspect this is also why it has the #Soundaktor with artificial engine noise..)
I'm glad I only started #driving in #middleage - as I'm not so tempted to be leadfooted, being aware of the consequences, both #roadsafety related and the #law (#speedlimits are enforced strictly here with #ANPR #cameras, with #fines for more egregious offences proportional to income), but I can see how #carCulture encourages young lads to go faster than they should (sometimes with unfortunate results)

#Drivers arriving and departing from #Glastonbury #Festival were subjected to #ANPR #surveillance from #AvonAndSomerset #Police and private motor #insurance companies checking for valid policies! 21 vehicles were seized for insurance offences. This is on top of whatever controls the old bill and other authorities were doing for DUI, taxi licensing etc (and it seems quite a lot of this happens around the Festival grounds nowadays!)

Daft lad at the start, why the fuck keep a live #dashcam running when you are openly committing #driving offences? Interesting insight into the #ANPR and #surveillance capabilities of the #Police (looks like #Cleartone kit with the old skool DOS font overlay)

Worrying the old bill found a #knife on folk they nicked at an unlicensed #rave in SW #England - they were taboo in the old days (unless used for something like cutting a rope to be used to secure something or stripping cables for emergency equipment repairs which only requires a knife that would be legal to carry). Also did the folk who left their cars behind and collected them later (due to not being sober) end up with details put on #ANPR for later targeting?

>Various AI-powered software programs were purchased under the governor’s border disaster declaration or in response to Abbott’s executive orders to prevent mass attacks, agency records show.
The defense sector is all a big grift.
>Several AI companies, including those that sell tech to DPS, have registered lobbyists in Texas this session, according to state records, including Clearview AI, Flock Safety, and LEO Technologies, which sells the Verus surveillance software. One company also has connections to state law enforcement in Texas: Skylor Hearn, a former DPS deputy director, was a registered lobbyist for Clearview AI in 2020 and 2021 and joined the company as its government affairs director in 2022. During his tenure at the firm, he testified in other states against banning or limiting police use of facial recognition tech. This session, Clearview AI has three registered lobbyists in Texas.
The revolving door keeps revolving.
>The Republican lawmaker cautioned that, while he would not necessarily call the agency’s capabilities a “dragnet,” he had concerns about protecting Texans’ privacy: “It does come into question whether we are creating a wide area of study of people who have not committed a crime and trying to use that for law enforcement purposes.”
"That's not bullshit. It's repurposed bovine waste."
>Meanwhile, Senator Parker’s bill, SB 1964, would require Texas agencies to more thoroughly report on how they use AI and what risks of “unlawful harm” these systems have. Under the bill, state agencies would be required to create impact assessments of any AI-powered tools they deploy—though the reports would be considered confidential and exempt from the Texas Public Information Act.
Intelligence for me but not for thee.
>“People want to make sure that the government isn’t just surveilling people who aren’t doing anything wrong just because they can. ..."
Completely missing the point. The government *defines* what "doing anything wrong" *is*. "Only going after bad guys" is tautological nonsense in this context.
>Shah, the attorney from Just Futures Law, said the dangers of surveillance technologies are easily overlooked because they are not viewed as inherently or imminently violent.
>
>“It’s just that it’s creating the infrastructure in which you can be harmed,” Shah said. Plus, she added, many surveillance tools were originally designed for warfare, or by former military intelligence personnel, and should be viewed through that lens and not as the “soft side” of policing, which is how some AI companies market the tools.
>
>“These are wartime technologies that are now in the hands of local cops,” she said. “We should be really worried.”At least one person quoted in the article understands the problem. Talk about burying the lede, @TexasObserver :P

A worrying part of this is companies in #Hungary are *good* at building #surveillance #tech; they already supply a very effective #ANPR app that anyone can download to their mobile phone (and the company making this is thriving and hiring, although their jobs page is in Hungarian).
I could not find any statements they are making facial recognition products, but this might not be something they publicise widely (and other companies will also make such products)

I know there's legal/privacy issues, but there are times I feel the Police /should/ name and shame commercial companies who are driving work #vans around without #insurance (the driver claimed to the officers he only bought the #van that day, but it already had his companys branding *and* he was wearing a branded T-shirt 🤡 ).
If this "entrepreneur" doesn't bother to insure the van, what other insurance is he lacking for the #building work he is doing?
-
The new #AI equipped #ANPR #camera #vans using tech developed in #Australia will be deployed by #WestMidlands #Police - they can apparently spot #speeding , seatbelt violations, #mobilephone use and even #DUI ! (probably by monitoring those who are driving erratically and not keeping to correct lanes)
Vans cost £47 000 each (cheaper than I had expected, a plain new van (without any Police equipment is £35k) #RoadSafety #Surveillance #UK
-
Is this really an "epidemic" of #DUI involving #drugs in #Britain - or just the case that the #Police are fairly effective at selecting their targets when they do conduct roadside stops (perhaps using #ANPR linked with #intelligence data?)
There is often sporadic enforcement and a lack of RPU (roads policing unit) resources as well as stubbornness and psychological #addiction so folk probably get complacent and think they can get away with it

#AI #traffic #surveillance #cameras designed in #Australia and also used in #Aotearoa / #NZ have been trialled in #Devon and #Cornwall #UK - they can detect #mobile #phone use, #seatbelt violations and its now claimed they can even detect #DUI (possibly through monitoring unusual driving such as not keeping constant speeds / straying out of correct lanes) on top of the usual #ANPR capabilities.. #cars #motoring #RoadSafety

"Police have been given the legal clearance to continue tapping into private cameras more than 200,000 times a year for evidence."

The surveillance-industrial complex, hard at work. If David Seymour cared about democracy he'd be fighting this, not fighting the Crown's grudging recognition of its obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Fen Lane in North #Ockendon near #Upminster -this point is the most Eastern part of Greater #London - 3,5 km away from the #M25 #motorway (which is not the exact border of Greater London!). Beyond this point you have crossed into #Thurrock #Essex (and are imediately greeted with a sign from the #Police warning that #ANPR cameras are in operation) #UK #Roads #Transport #Geography

Just had a sponsored post for an #ANPR #surveillance camera scheme appear in my #Meta feed, from a company that sells "normal " #CCTV equipment. and burglar alarms. The kit seems as capable as that used by the public services, yet is clearly intended for small private users (such as guarding a yard/car park). Such schemes are widespread in #ESEA countries, but its the first time I've seen one advertised to the #UK market..
