  1. Highly unlikely dream. I was hatching #snakes and #anoles and feeding them something like chicken. But I have only passing knowledge about snakes and such. I don’t expect they are that big from hatching or that carnivorous from the start. Maybe eating little things, but not whole chickens. Anyhow, different. The anole was very aggressive. So much so that I was searching for tongs to handle it, and then I woke up. #dream

  2. I'm going to listen to the new episode of squamatespod soon because I suspect @markscherz is somehow involved in the naming of six frogs after various Star Trek captains.

I kept expecting someone to say "Seven new frogs just beamed down" or something like that, but sadly nobody did. : (

  4. Research explores the cooling effects of 'scuba-diving' in lizards phys.org/news/2024-02-explores

Diving behavior in semi-aquatic Anolis #lizards results in heat loss with sex-specific cooling tolerance link.springer.com/article/10.1

"#Anoles are the scuba-diving champions of the #lizard world, able to stay underwater for more than 16 minutes. For #animals whose body temperature depends on the environment, time spent in a cool running stream can have some tradeoffs."

research inspired by observation that after the islands where the anoles lived was affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, survivors had bigger toe-pads, and larger arms. The researchers had already been surveying the morphology of the anoles on the islands before the hurricanes struck, and discovered the change when they returned to survey work after.

  6. Unfortunately, I suspect these #anoles of collectively having a death wish. 😔 I haven't seen them for a few weeks, and I think it might have something to do with their propensity for climbing into highly visible locations and changing colour so they look like green laser-pointer spots.

So I suspect birds. Or perhaps the blue-tailed #skinks that abound. I wonder if they get along, or if they have a predator/prey relationship. 🤔

  7. At least three specimens of Anole carolinensis are living at the base of the house. This one is named Tonda (John Matuszak's character from "Caveman") because he's huge. The smallest, most retiring one is named Atouk, and the mid-sized one is Linebacker (because of his markings).

the rage is real today gd I need to relax

Here's a very soothing picture of Polly sneakin a little peek from around the door of her tank to say "Hey dude, heard you were freakin out. Go eat a snack, maybe."

This is Boomy, the baby of our 5 #anoles.

Something that always charms me about our anoles is when they show off this striking eyeshadow.

If you didn't know, green anoles have the ability to change color! They're sometimes called American Chameleons (though they're not Chameleons, but true #lizards).

They have a range of greens, yellows, blues, and browns that you might find them wearing, so I always feel lucky to catch them when they're rocking this look!

  10. This anole caught something, I can’t quite discern what it is, I originally thought it was a small moth.

Evolution proceeds at a glacial pace, or does it? The excellent @JLosos will present the evolution of a 30-year experimental evolution research program studying lizard adaptation to changing conditions in the Bahamas. Can't wait for the 🦎🦎🦎
