How to run GoG Anno 1404 Gold Edition on Linux?

Just a short one this evening as a reminder for myself. My son wanted to try a real time stratagy game, and because my wife loved the Anno series of games years ago, we wanted to give it a shot.

It is available on Steam, but for some idiotic reason this 15 year old game seems to need an Ubisoft account there, what sucks.

But it is also available on GOG.com for half of the price, so i gave it a shot there.

Unfortunately installing it on my CachyOS Machine was not a breeze, until i found the right combination.

And that is using Heroic Game Launcher with Wine-GE 8-26. With that version installed via the Heroic Game Launcher it worked right away. With other Versions i only got a blackscreen while hearing the music of the game.

#Linux ist schon awesome. Wir hatten die Idee wieder #Anno1404 zu spielen. Blöderweise sind die #Multiplayer #Server bereits offline und wir wohnen in verschiedenen Ländern. Und der LAN-Multiplayer findet Lobbies nur über Netzwerk #broadcasts.

Also haben wir in den letzten Tagen:
* #Anno unter Linux zum Laufen gebracht
* Einen #openVPN server mit #tap (statt tun) connections eingerichtet.
* Anno innerhalb eines eigenen network Namespaces gestartet, um die broadcasts über den VPN zu zwingen.

Ahja, nachdem #Anno1404 nur per Auto-Discovery die Partner finden kann haben wir eben das gute alte #Siedler3 gespielt. Da kann man nämlich direkt die IP-Adresse des Spielservers angeben.
Hat prima funktioniert über das #WireguardVPN 👌🏼
