A present from my son for my recent birthday: the latest in #AnnLeckie ' s loosely linked series of space operas. Here imperial civil war (the main story of some of the earlier books) triggers chaos in a remote part of the empire, a rogue planet with religious significance but little ability to sustain itself as interstellar trade is disrupted. I don't think there's anyone quite like Leckie for elegantly setting up a complex and unique society, and then throwing it against a wall to see what happens. Not quite an all time favourite of mine like some of her other books, but very, very good. However there is no excuse for calling the main city Ooioiaa; I pity the audiobook narrator. @bookstodon #bookstodon

Radiant Star by Ann Leckie – review
So to my 29th book of 2026, and I was looking forward to this one. Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy (plus Provenance and Translation State) has been one of the few bright spots in the moribund science fiction scene, and with Radiant Star she takes us back to the same universe to tell a small story set on an insignificant little world called, hilariously Aaa.
It’s as if you wanted to make sure you wanted to appear first in the Planetary Directory.
And the main (only) city under the surface of the frozen Aaa is Ooioiaa, which is also funny.
This is a story of colonisation. Here is a group of humans living a strange existence on a strange, consonantless, planet, and here come the Radchaai, imposing their ways (and, quite disastrously, their food) on the local population, who both hate their colonial rulers and scheme to win their favour.
The local religion revolves around an absence: a sacred site called the Temporal Location of the Radiant Star, where different sects vie with each other and where clerics have visions and tend “saints”, who are mummified people who sit in alcoves around the sacred site.
There is scheming and rivalry among these religious sects, but also among prominent families who control the local infrastructure, and there is carelessness, callousness, greed and worse as this particular colonial enterprise starts to go wrong. And all this against the backdrop of the vast Radch empire and its civil war: a much larger story that takes place elsewhere, but which nevertheless affects everyone. *Gives side-eye to Strait of Hormuz*
What I love most about reading Ann Leckie is the clarity of her prose. And here, as a bonus, we have a chatty narrator who is both apparently omniscient but also a distinct personality with attitudes to match. Lots of pronoun fun, too, as you might expect.
There have now been six titles in the Radch trilogy, and I’m here for more, if Leckie is up for providing them.

Here's an interesting exploration of gender in Ann Leckie's books. I'd hoped it would address the more complex gender identities in the various non-Radch societies we encounter in the spinoff books, but there's still lots of ground to cover just looking at the supposedly single-gendered Radch and their newly genderless enslaved soldiers. #AnnLeckie #ImperialRadch #Radch

#AnnLeckie is so good at making more-than-2-genders feel natural, at using unusual pronouns and really at making characters feel real and important without fitting neatly into buckets labeled male and female, that sometimes you will be shocked by something like "it had become bored, which one might imagine would be a dangerous state for an enormous warship".
For multiple chapters said warship felt as alive and real as any other character, I forgot it's not a biological being at all. -

I liked it!
A cute, clever book set concurrently with the Radch Civil War from the original "Ancillary" trilogy, but on a planet of no particular significance to the Radch or the war.

The connections to her novels are weak enough that you could read them without worrying about spoilers or missing context. #FinishedReading #AnnLeckie 's sole novel outside her sci fi universe, a #fantasy told from the perspective of a god, moving between their own millennia-spanning story and their observations of a struggle for power among humans in the (roughly) Bronze age present day. Maybe not her absolute best work - I found it a bit exposition heavy - but given her best work stands among my favourite reads ever, that's OK! Mulla on nyt ollut kohta puolentoista kuukauden ajan kesken tää Leckien erinomainen novellikokoelma. Oon usein näiden kanssa vähän hidas, koska jumitun johonkin yli 30 sivua pitkään novelliin, kun odotan sopivaa aloitushetkeä. (Kanish Tharoorin "Swimmer Among the Stars" -kokoelma on ollut mulla kesken kohta viisi vuotta.)
Nyt olen lukenut tästä ensimmäiset neljä. Ekassa oli riemastuttavaa avaruusantropologiaa, toka oli creepy kahden sivun kauhunovelli, kolmas hauskaa leikittelyä Edgar Rice Burroughsin Mars-sarjalla ja neljäs niin ikään riemastuttava tarina siitä, mitä olisi tapahtunut, jos velociraptorit(?) olisivatkin olleet niin älykkäitä, että olisivat lähteneet avaruusmatkalle kohti Marsia juuri ennen valtavan meteoriitin iskeytymistä Maahan.
Metkaa kamaa. Päivittelen tänne myös lopuista paloissa sitä mukaa kun etenen, mutta tää on ollut jo nyt viehättävä kokoelma.

Book Review – Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
My first book of 2025 is the second book I’ve read by author Ann Leckie. Both books, Translation State and Ancillary Justice, are set in the same world of the Imperial Radch series, though the stories are not directly connected. Reading Translation State led me to Ancillary Justice, the first book of Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy, and I am eagerly looking forward to book two.
Ancillary Justice introduces us to Breq, a soldier, at least that’s how they present themselves. In reality, Breq is the last surviving ancillary of Justice of Toren, a destroyed warship of the Radch, and is on a mission of vengeance, one which will immensely change the empire, either in success or failure.
Characters like Breq, the last fragment of an artificial intelligence over 2000 years old now contained in a human body, and Seivarden, a former Lieutenant on the Justice of Toren a thousand years ago. Both are fish out of water, Breq as an AI trying to pass as human and Seivardan, a human a thousand years out of time who has lost everything. These two do need each other, though, of course, neither knows or believes it for some time, and their shared journey throughout the book, along with Breq’s back story, is compelling on its own.
Ancillary Justice has the distinct honor of earning the Hugo Award, Nebula Award, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the only book to do so. I can see why and I think you will, as well. I completed the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and I look forward to reading the rest of this one.

After many recommendations in the last couple of years I've finally started on the Imperial Radch series by Ann Leckie. I've barely started but it's an entirely captivating bit of worlds-building with lots of references to things that might be explained later or might not, which I like. But the gender thing is already starting to grate a little bit. If it's not integral to the eventual storyline culmination I'm going to be just a bit miffed.

I am a #diplomat and have learned a few languages, some of them well and some less well. I have loved #AnnLeckie’s “Another Word for World” since I first read it some years ago and it was a pleasure to re-encounter it in her #LakeOfSouls collection of short fiction. I use #MachineLanguageTranslation tools on a regular basis but am also glad of and sensitive to what I’ve learned by learning languages from people for whom it’s their culture as well. #linguistics #sff #LanguageLearning

#SciFi book haul today from a trip down town. The two Adrian Tchaikovsky books complete two trilogies, and seeing the Ann Leckie trilogy (even if the covers don't match) I felt compelled to pick them up as she's an author that's been recommended to me a few times now.
Thanks to some book tokens and bookshop loyalty reward, these five only cost a tenner. Absolute bargain.

#FinishedReading the followup to #AnnLeckie 's Imperial Radch trilogy. Although it is set in a different milieu, very much recommended to read the Ancillary books first because the conclusion of that series is a plot point here. Leckie is one of the best in #SciFi for inventing alternative cultures and seeing how they can clash or cooperate; here the high concepts are wrapped in a fun and twisty, somewhat noirish, tale of murder and politics #Bookstodon @bookstodon
