Due to the long drought this year in Spain there are far fewer insects and arachnids than in previous years, and therefore it is also much more difficult to find predators such as this beautiful Argiope bruennichi wasp spider.

I don't use a white case on the iPhone just for aesthetic reasons. I chose it that color because the smartphone gets less hot in the sun and because I found that reflecting sunlight at close range helps me to compensate for backlight in some macro shots.

No uso una funda blanca en el iPhone sólo por motivos estéticos. La elegí de ese color porque el smartphone se calienta menos al sol y porque descubrí que al reflejar la luz del sol a corta distancia me ayuda a contrarestar el controluz en algunas fotos macro.

Ich verwende für mein iPhone nicht nur aus ästhetischen Gründen eine weiße Hülle. Ich habe mich für diese Farbe entschieden, weil sich das Smartphone in der Sonne nicht so sehr aufheizt und weil ich festgestellt habe, dass die reflektierte Sonneneinstrahlung im Nahbereich bei einigen Makroaufnahmen hilft, Gegenlicht auszugleichen.

This bee (eucera longicornis) has been lucky enough to be rescued from a swimming pool. Completely soaked, it manages to dry out in the sun. The antennae of this bee are very long (even longer in males) but so is its glossa or proboscis.

Esta abeja (eucera longicornis) ha tenido la suerte de ser rescatada de una piscina. Completamente empapada consigue secarse al sol. Las antenas de esta abeja son muy largas (aun más en los machos) pero también lo es su glossa o probóscide.

Diese Biene (eucera longicornis) hatte das Glück, aus einem Schwimmbad gerettet zu werden. Völlig durchnässt gelang es ihr, in der Sonne zu trocknen. Die Fühler dieser Biene sind sehr lang (bei den Männchen sogar noch länger), aber das gilt auch für die Glosse oder den Rüssel.

Argiope trifasciata is easily mistaken for the wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi). It injects its victims with paralyzing venom and gastric juices that cause external digestion of its prey. I have photographed this one capturing an oxythirea funesta beetle which it wraps in a few seconds with the silk produced by its anal glands. (Calpe, Alicante, early October).

La Argiope trifasciata es fácilmente confundible con la araña tigre (Argiope bruennichi). Inyecta a sus víctimas un veneno paralizante y con jugos gástricos que provocan la digestión externa de sus presas. He fotografiado ésta capturando un escarabajo oxythirea funesta al que envuelve en pocos segundos con la seda que producen sus glándulas anales.

Argiope trifasciata ist leicht mit der Wespenspinne (Argiope bruennichi) zu verwechseln. Sie injiziert ihren Opfern ein lähmendes Gift und Magensäfte, die eine äußere Verdauung der Beute bewirken. Ich habe dieses Exemplar fotografiert, wie es einen Oxythirea funesta-Käfer fängt, den es in wenigen Sekunden mit der von seinen Analdrüsen produzierten Seide einwickelt.

Last night I tried this bluetooth smartphone grip with fill light lamp (there are several very similar models from different brands). In some cases it can be useful for me, especially when I can only use one hand to take the photos. In this case, this wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) didn't seem to react to the light but I tried it later with a Cyrtophora citricola and it did seem to scare it.

Anoche probé esta empuñadura bluetooth para smartphone con lámpara de luz de relleno (hay varios modelos muy similares de diferentes marcas). En algunos casos puede serme útil, especialmente cuando sólo puedo usar una mano para hacer las fotos. En este caso, esta araña tigre (Argiope bruennichi) no pareció reaccionar a la luz pero probé más tarde con una Cyrtophora citricola y si que pareció asustarle.

Gestern Abend habe ich diese Bluetooth-Smartphone-Halterung mit Fülllichtlampe ausprobiert (es gibt mehrere sehr ähnliche Modelle von verschiedenen Marken). In manchen Fällen kann sie für mich nützlich sein, besonders wenn ich nur eine Hand zum Fotografieren benutzen kann. In diesem Fall schien diese Wespenpinne (Argiope bruennichi) nicht auf das Licht zu reagieren, aber ich versuchte es später mit einer Cyrtophora citricola und es schien sie zu erschrecken.

Llega el mes de agosto y con éste las Argiope bruennichi o arañas tigre que creo que son las más llamativas por tamaño y colorido que puedes encontrar en Europa. He fotografiado ésta hembra en su posición habitual sobre su telaraña junto al estanque de un parque de Valencia.

Transportan polen en la parte inferior del abdomen y no en las patas traseras como otras abejas. Anidan en el suelo y en distintas cavidades, incluso conchas vacías de caracoles.

Eine rote Rhodanthidium sticticum-Biene auf einer Sauerklee-Blüte, Oxalis pes-caprae (eine in Namibia heimische invasive Art). Sie tragen den Pollen auf ihrem Unterleib und nicht wie andere Bienen auf ihren Hinterbeinen. Sie nisten auf dem Boden und in verschiedenen Höhlen, unter anderem in leeren Schneckenhäusern.

I have learned that using a high-magnification macro lens on a smartphone is usually not a good idea. The depth of field is greatly reduced and it is very difficult to focus on a moving insect perched on windblown plants. I took this one with an iPhone 13 with a lens removed from small binoculars.
It is a male Eucera (eucera longicornis). The antennae of this bee are much longer in males than in females.

He aprendido que usar en el móvil una lente macro con gran aumento no suele ser buena idea. La profundidad de campo se reduce mucho y es muy difícil enfocar a un insecto que se mueve y que está posado sobre plantas que mueve el viento. Esta la he hecho con un iPhone 13 con una lente desmontada de unos binoculares pequeños.
Es una Eucera macho (eucera longicornis). Las antenas de esta abeja son mucho mas largas en los machos que en las hembras.

Ich habe gelernt, dass die Verwendung eines Makroobjektivs mit starker Vergrößerung an einem smartphone normalerweise keine gute Idee ist. Die feldtiefe ist stark reduziert, und es ist sehr schwierig, ein sich bewegendes Insekt, das auf windverwehten Pflanzen sitzt, zu fokussieren. Dieses Bild wurde mit einem iPhone 13 aufgenommen, bei dem das Objektiv eines kleinen Fernglases entfernt wurde.
Es ist eine männliche Eucera (eucera longicornis). Die Fühler dieser Biene sind bei den Männchen viel länger als bei den Weibchen.

When a damselfly (Coenagrium puella) falls into the trap, it runs towards it and wraps it with the silk rapidly secreted by its glands on the underside of its abdomen.
