W ostatnim numerze czasopisma "Food Ethics" opublikowano artykuł Daniela Dorado z Animal Ethics zatytułowany "Why Health-Based Vegan Advocacy May Harm More Animals Than It Saves".

Conclusion: The Human-Animal Web• Humans are described as one thread in a vast, continuous living web.
• Domestic pets, such as dogs and cats, foster empathy in children that bridges the gap between our homes and wild animals like elephants.
• The findings demand a reconsideration of our relationship with the conscious, feeling beings in the natural world.

By recognizing these shared emotions, we take a giant stride toward understanding the living web we inhabit. So, let's dive into the animal mind and see the world through a completely new light. The Paradigm Shift: From "It" to "Who"
• Science is moving away from viewing animals as biological "its"—mechanical beings driven solely by instinct—to recognizing them as conscious "whos".

This isn’t just sentiment—it’s biological truth. Modern neurology reveals that we inherited our nervous systems from the same evolutionary tree as the creatures around us. From crayfish experiencing clinical anxiety to elephants making strategic alliances, we are finding that the biological trails of human emotion are built upon ancient trails shared by all living things.#animals

This shift becomes clear when you look at the life of an elephant. Consider Echo, a matriarch who slowed her entire family's pace for three days just to allow her crippled calf to survive. This wasn't a mechanical reaction; it was a choice fueled by profound empathy and wisdom.#animals

FROM 'IT TO 'WHO'
For the longest time, science viewed animals as biological "its"—living machines driven entirely by automated instinct. But today, field research is providing undeniable evidence that demands a massive paradigm shift: looking at them not as objects, but as conscious "whos".

• Social Connectivity: Images of a Khamti man and his elephant resting at a farm in 2008 illustrate the complex, long-term relationships and shared environments between species.
Conclusion:
Science is finally catching up to what common sense has long suggested: we are surrounded by "alien nations"—vast, ancient, and highly intelligent minds caught with us in the net of life and time.Includes 20-title bibliography.

Visual Evidence & Photography:The production is anchored by authentic field photography, rejecting AI-generated imagery to maintain a "porous boundary" between the observer and the subject.
• The Individual Gaze: Extreme close-ups of elephant eyes highlight the sentient presence and ancient brain circuits described in the podcast.
-

• The Umwelt and Capabilities Approach:Moving beyond "human-centrism" to respect the distinct sensory bubbles of other species—such as the elephant’s infrasonic and seismic communication network—and advocating for an ethics based on an individual’s drive to flourish.

• Theory of Mind & Cross-Species Empathy:Remarkable accounts of animal intelligence, including scrub jays using tactical deception and wild elephants extending proactive protection to vulnerable humans.

• Elephant Society & Individual Genius: A deep dive into the fission-fusion social structures of elephants. We explore the role of the matriarch as a "distributed backup server" for ecological knowledge and the devastating mental toll that poaching and social disruption take on surviving herds. -

• The #Neuropharmacology of #Sentience:A look at how animals suffer from the same psychological disorders as humans—including OCD, PTSD, and clinical depression—and how they respond to the exact same human pharmaceutical medications.

• The Biological Evidence:Understanding the "chemical language" of sentience. We discuss how core emotions like joy, grief, and fear are generated in ancient subcortical structures shared by all mammals, birds, and even invertebrates like octopuses and crayfish.

Key Topics Explored:• The Cartesian Blind Spot: We trace the history of why science denied animal feelings for centuries, from René Descartes’ "biological automata" theory to the professional strictness of 20th-century Behaviorism.

Osoby uczestniczące w filmie: Peter Singer (Princeton University; autor przełomowej książki "Wyzwolenie zwierząt"), Constance Li (Sentient Futures), Max Taylor (Animal Charity Evaluators), Jonathan Birch (London School of Economics), Bernice Bovenkerk (Wageningen University & Research), Tse Yip Fai (National University of Singapore), Aditya S. Karanam (Animal Ethics), Jeff Sebo (New York University), Oscar Horta (University of Santiago de Compostela), Vanessa Sarre (Macroscopic Ventures), Adrià Moret (University of Barcelona), Caatje Kluskens (Wageningen University & Research), Sam Tucker (Open Paws), Kevin Xia (Hive), Matti Wilks (University of Edinburgh), Alexandra Hammond (Liverpool John Moores University).

“We do not have to politicize ecology – we have to ecologize politics.”
"To overcome the anthropocentric and dualistic foundations of the first Enlightenment, we need to overcome the dualisms between nature and culture, humans and animals."
"The duties of the state cannot be limited to the reduction of inequalities and to security. We need to talk about justice to future generations and animals."
"Ecology is not reducible to the fight against climate change and the erosion of biodiversity – it is also the way we share resources and the burden of the fight against climate change. Ecology has a social dimension, not to mention the fact that it forces us to change the way we work as well as our modes of production. It has an existential dimension that is connected to our relationships with other beings."

Tagged it for you ;) Yay deciding who gets to be human or not. We really need to, as a species, get a different obsession. Trains would be satisfactory.

Here's an interesting website about #AnimalEthics with some questions to make you think about your own views on how humans should treat other animals: http://ae.imcode.com/
It has a questionnaire to see in what category you fall (Contractarian, Utilitarian etc.) at the start, and several "dilemmas" to help refine your thoughts.
It doesn't tell you which view is better, just helps with self-reflection.

Season 3 Episode 2: Thinking About How We Think About Animals with Dr Chloë Taylor
Today’s episode is all about animal ethics—or do we mean critical animal studies? Ariel discusses this linguistic nuance and the difference between them (and much, much more!) with Dr Chloë Taylor, professor of women and gender studies at the University of Alberta. Dr Taylor has been involved in a five-year-long project researching the “Intersections of Animality” and is a trained philosopher who works in gender studies, and sees a lot of intersections between the way that we think about and treat animals and the way that we think about and treat minoritized subjects. Come join us for a thought-provoking and highly educational discussion!
