  1. Ancient flowering #plants may have used #dinosaurs to spread their #seeds
    #Fossils upend a long-held theory about #angiosperm #evolution
Over 74 million years ago, there was a richer garden of fruit- and seed-bearing plants than scientists thought. A #fossil analysis suggests that tall forest trees spread winged seeds and fed animals with fleshy, blueberry-sized fruits long before the reign of the dinosaurs ended.

  3. "These data give us a new insight into the #evolutionary relationships between wood nanostructure and the cell wall composition, which differs across the lineages of #angiosperm and #gymnosperm plants. By identifying the potential selective pressures for the evolution of macrofibril morphology, our work provides the basis for selection or engineering for desirable wood properties and may open up routes for improved #carbon #sequestration in plantation forests."

  6. New from #JIPB! Hu et al. reveal #genome-scale #angiosperm #phylogenies based on #nuclear, #plastome, & #mitochondrial datasets. They go on to discuss #evolutionary trajectories and speak to the issue of addressing inconsistencies.

  7. A #Microraptor investigates some strange colourful plants - the first #flowers she’s ever seen.

This started out as an idea to do a piece on #angiosperm evolution, but that turned out to be a way deeper and more contentious issue than I thought. Molecular evidence says they go way back to the Devonian! So these #lingyuananthus flowers are only new to this Microraptor because they were still fairly rare, not because they were truly new.

  8. Help! I was going to design a nice poster for the #SFU science #knitting group and I've fallen down a rabbit hole of public domain #angiosperm and #gymnosperm photos... and I want to knit them all. flickr.com/photos/146824358@N0
