30 sierpnia obchodzimy rocznicę urodzin Antony’ego Gormleya (ur. 1950), brytyjskiego rzeźbiarza znanego z monumentalnych instalacji inspirowanych ludzkim ciałem. Jego „Angel of the North” stał się jednym z symboli współczesnej Brytanii. Gormley nie tylko tworzy, ale zmusza do zatrzymania się i kontemplacji. (fot. For my money, 28 Years Later is one of the best movies in years. Fun in execution but rich in meaning and subtext.
What seems to be getting less attention is how much of a love letter to Northumberland it is. From the Holy Island setting, the Viking invaders, the Blaydon Races, the sense of coalmining community, Sycamore Gap & the Angel of the North, it's marinated in love for my small part of the world.

I took this picture of the "Angel of the North" on my way home from work in May 2006!! 😲 This would have been with a Canon 350D. Given it a quick tidy up here in RawTherapee and Photoshop. #AngelOfTheNorth #Tyneside #Photography

I regret that rather than an awesome #SciFi #spacestation, my mind immediately connected the wish-it-were-forgettable #AngelOfTheNorth.
Having been visually ambushed by this UK #MilleniumProject whilst crossing Tyne and Wear by motorway shortly after its completion in 1998, I can understand why its admirers have struggled to get it a protected heritage designation.
Engineering-wise, it’s interesting though. And it honours the county’s history of shipbuilding.

The #AngelofTheNorth is 25 years old today. From my #artjournal in 2008. "Today I read about the guy who crossed the channel with a wing and some jet engines strapped to his back. I saw a glider soar above a swarm of model aircraft buzzing over the A1. Then a flock of lapwings fluttered up on high like giant handfuls of black and white confetti. It felt as it was calling to us, sending emissaries to hurry us on our way. My 'pilgrimage' made me alive to everything in the sky.
And then you arrive and discover that the sculpture is rooted in concrete with piles as deep as it is high. But it is still a creature of the air. Not cold and distant, in splendid isolation, but surrounded by mothers and lovers, clambered over by kids, and crawled upon by one tiny caterpillar. Transcending industrial brutalization and lifting us all with its wings." 27.09.08
