  1. XTC
    Black Sea
    1980 Canada pressing

Came down with a bit of a “Partridge deficiency” today, and last spin of the night goes to the pill I need.

Their fourth album, and one that would slightly hint at the masterful opus that was to come immediately after, English Settlement.

“Generals And Majors”, “Respectable Street”, “Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me)”, “Rocket From A Bottle”… just so many good tunes on this one.

    Andy Partridge is a genius.
And yet, somehow regularly disrespected and never mentioned among the greatest pop songwriters ever.

    Which he is.

  6. Nonsuch

XTC release their follow-up to Oranges & Lemons on April 27, 1992. Gus Dudgeon (yes, he of Elton John Fame) produced this lush album, mostly written by Andy Partridge using a keyboard rather than guitar. That explains the "baroque" arrangements that set the tone for the album. The album got a Grammy nod for "Best Alternative Music Album" in 1993. #xtc #nonsuch #90smusic #music #musicsky #musiciansky #rock #rockmusic #altrock #alternativerock #andypartridge

  11. Joan Armatrading - Walk Under Ladders

In the early 80s, Armatrading pivoted to a more pop sound. On Me Myself I (produced by Richard Gottehrer of Blondie fame) she was backed by most of Springsteen's band.

On this 1981 release Steve Lillywhite takes over the boards, and she's backed by folks like Tony Levin, Andy Partridge, Sly & Robbie, Jerry Marotta,, and Thomas Dolby.

    A&M clearly wanted a hit.

    Lots of fun.

  12. There’s been a lot of love here (rightly so) for XTC lately, so sharing this EP for those who might have missed it. A collaboration, but Andy Partridge’s style and song structure shine through. I love it. #CD #xtc #AndyPartridge #The3Clubmen

  13. XTC - Skylarking

The last truly great XTC album, mostly because the strong hand of Todd Rundgren insisted on steering the ship, preventing (the obviously brilliant, but self-sabotaging) Andy from riding roughshod over his bandmates.

Later albums had their high points, but none were as consistently excellent.

Glorious pop from beginning to end.

(Bought the 12" Grass single in Vancouver during the World's Fair…)

  14. Skylarking

Considered by many to be their finest, XTC release Skylarking on October 27, 1986. It's produced by Todd Rundgren. Listen to Skylarking by XTC on Amazon Music ... #XTC #skylarking #alternativerock #andypartridge #artrock @neopsychedelia #pshychedelicpop
