While Samsung was working on One UI 9 Watch for the Galaxy Watch7 series which has entered testing, new builds for the Galaxy Watch7 have been spotted, which suggest that One UI 9 Watch Beta is going to start in the next few weeks.

According to the testing servers in Korea, the Galaxy Watch7 series is getting ready for the next stage of testing. We have spotted the first internal beta build being spotted for this smartwatch series.

The following firmware builds have been spotted:

• SM-L310: L310XXU2ZZH2 [KOO]
• SM-L300: L300XXU2ZZH2 [KOO]

Currently, there are no beta builds for the above smartwatch series yet, but if Samsung has opened the beta program, you will be able to join the beta program through Samsung Members if your watch, your region, and your carrier is eligible. Google Play System Update (July 2026) rolls out for Samsung devices

Google Play System Update was a feature that was introduced for devices that ship with Android 10 or newer. It’s mandatory for device manufacturers that plan to release their devices with Android 10 to support Google Play System Updates. As a result, non-Google devices, such as Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets released with Android 10 (One UI 2.1), can receive such updates, too.

These updates don’t require security updates from the manufacturer to work, as Project Mainline modules work independently to give you better experience with Android phones and tablets.

On July 29th, a new Google Play System Update has been pushed to Samsung devices. This update upgrades your Project Mainline modules to the July 1st, 2026 version. This update weighs around 14 MB.

To be able to get this version, follow these steps:

1. Go to your device’s settings
2. Open the security settings
3. Find “Google Play System Update” and tap on it
4. If everything goes OK, you should see the below update dialog:

Click on Download and Install, wait for it to download, then reboot your device by clicking on the blue Restart button. The next time your device boots up, the revised update gets installed, so it’s going to take about 3 minutes maximum to install all the updates.

There is no progress bar, so don’t panic if it looks stuck. Your device will eventually boot up. Now, open your settings app and check your Google Play System Update. If everything is well, you should see July 1st, 2026 below the appropriate button.

In case your device didn’t receive the update, wait for a few days, and it will be available shortly.

Android 17 seems the least consequential OS update that I’ve seen in years

I installed a whole-number release of Google’s mobile operating system on my phone Wednesday, and about the only way I can tell that I’ve gone from Android 16 to Android 17 is when I clear my notifications.

Instead of the old “No notifications” confirmation, the new version of Android gives me a little pep talk: a “You’re all caught up” message below a trophy icon. Which is nice, even if being free of new app notifications is an exceedingly temporary condition for me.

I expected a little more out of Android 17 because I’d written as much in a series of posts for PCMag over the past six months chronicling this release’s progress through a series of developer preview and beta releases.

Google hadn’t been promising anything epic, but the reality of Android 17 as shipped is so much less that my PCMag colleague Flo Ion borrowed some journalistic lingo to convey how many advertised features have yet to ship: “Android TK.”

While I wait for Google to deliver Android 17capabilities like Gemini Intelligence and Pause Point, what do I get from this release?

Google’s post announcing 17 leads off with bubble multitasking, an option to open an app into a smaller window you can condense back into a floating app icon. But my Pixel 9 Pro’s screen isn’t big enough for a feature built for the larger displays of foldable phones and tablets.

With the second feature highlighted in that post, Screen Reactions, the problem isn’t my phone’s screen but the person using it. I almost never post video and have never even thought about posting a clip where I’m offering some value judgment about what’s on my phone’s screen. (Maybe I should now?)

Android 17’s security and privacy enhancements are less fun to talk about but matter more to me. I can now limit an app’s request for my location to only my current session with that app, the Advanced Protection option and default device-theft countermeasures offer additional defenses against somebody attempting to break into my phone after taking it from me, and this release features Google’s first Android support for post-quantum-computing cryptography.

But the privacy upgrade I was most looking forward to using–a new Contact Picker interface that will let you respond to an app’s request for your contacts by letting it see only the contacts of your choice–requires app developers to support that feature first. WhatsApp, which won’t even let me enable backup to my Google account without contacts access, desperately needs this… but I’m not exactly expecting Meta to drop everything to enable it in its messaging app.

I know the story is still being written with Android 17; Google plans to follow the pattern it set with Android 16, where a secondary update late in the year brings additional features. In the meantime, I suppose this unassuming release offers one other modest benefit: When so much of the tech universe is overrunning with drama, I don’t have to worry about that here.

This time the organizers (who as per our usual arrangement are picking up airfare and lodging) have me moderating four panels. All of them are about AI in some way, and two only got added to my schedule this weekend.

6/1/2026: ‘Craigslist Founder Teams Up With a Muppet to Persuade People to Stop Clicking on Scams, PCMag

For the second time in six months, I had a video conversation with Craiglist founder-turned philanthropist about his Take9 efforts to get people to take a beat before clicking through sketchy links. This time, we discussed how Newmark has enlisted the help of a vaguely vampiric purple potentate–Sesame Street’s Count von Count–in this effort.

6/2/2026: T-Mobile Offers Fresh Set of Freebies for 10th Anniversary of T-Mobile Tuesdays, PCMag

T-Mobile offered an advance on this news but got the final version of their press release to me way too late in the workday on Monday. My editors were fine with me filing something Tuesday afternoon.

6/3/2026: Google Will Soon Spot Fake Calls on Supported Android Phones, PCMag

I noted some of the software dependencies of the new fake-call-detection feature, but Ars Technica’s Ryan Whitwam (once again) went into much more detail about them in his writeup.

6/3/2026: Report Cites Misinformation As Key Threat to Election Security, Doesn’t Name the Biggest Offenders, PCMag

The chance to quiz one of Check Point’s security experts about this report made for a more interesting post. Having to update it with a clarification about leaked credentials from the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue made for a more time-consuming post.

Google Play System Update (May 2026) rolls out for Samsung devices

Google Play System Update was a feature that was introduced for devices that ship with Android 10 or newer. It’s mandatory for device manufacturers that plan to release their devices with Android 10 to support Google Play System Updates. As a result, non-Google devices, such as Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets released with Android 10 (One UI 2.1), can receive such updates, too.

These updates don’t require security updates from the manufacturer to work, as Project Mainline modules work independently to give you better experience with Android phones and tablets.

On June 3rd, a new Google Play System Update has been pushed to Samsung devices. This update upgrades your Project Mainline modules to the May 1st, 2026 version. This update weighs around 98 MB.

To be able to get this version, follow these steps:

1. Go to your device’s settings
2. Open the security settings
3. Find “Google Play System Update” and tap on it
4. If everything goes OK, you should see the below update dialog:

Click on Download and Install, wait for it to download, then reboot your device by clicking on the blue Restart button. The next time your device boots up, the revised update gets installed, so it’s going to take about 3 minutes maximum to install all the updates.

There is no progress bar, so don’t panic if it looks stuck. Your device will eventually boot up. Now, open your settings app and check your Google Play System Update. If everything is well, you should see May 1st, 2026 below the appropriate button.

In case your device didn’t receive the update, wait for a few days, and it will be available shortly.
