The moment we have #Wholphin on #AppleTV, or at least a #Jellyfin client as incredible and polished as Wholphin (ngl, sounds impossible), I’ll consider getting one and switching over from #AndroidTV. One, cos I’m already in the #Apple ecosystem, sure, but mostly cos I neither trust #Google and their partners dats for sure. Unfortunately tho, unlike w #iPhone/#iOS vs #Android phones, Android TV prolly has better/more apps - likely cos of the cost difference resulting to no one really using Apple TV except maybe Americans.

[Перевод] Как превратить Смарт ТВ в «почти» полноценную рабочую станцию на Linux

Every time I see people complaining on the #Plex subreddit about their deteriorating exp, which is all the time, and now seeing people complaining abt the ridiculous increase in price of their one-time payment plan (which to my recollection was already increased super recently) - makes me grateful I hadn't decided on paying for Plex to stay on it, but rather migrate away to a #FOSS platform which was #Jellyfin.
I understood people's decision to stay on Plex because it was 'better' than Jellyfin - at least OOTB, but I swear to god the margin wasn't a lot, and now the margin's decreased to almost nothing and in a lot of aspects, Jellyfin IS better, tho it's not without its own issues but that applies to Plex too. Trust me when I say I'm not biased just bcos Jellyfin is FOSS lol, I really am saying the way it is (for me).
The only issues I had (when migrating from Plex) or I'm still having on Jellyfin (that I didn't on Plex):
- Subtitle desync: does happen for certain media/under certain conditions - this is infuriating when it happens, but fortunately, does not happen all the time and can often be worked around
- 'Non-ideal' web UI: easily fixable/customisable using custom CSS you could grab online - applies globally too (i.e. to all users)
- 'Non-ideal' clients: no longer an issue with the plethora of amazing third-party clients we have like #Streamyfin on #iOS/#Android, and #Wholphin on #AndroidTV (the best of all of em, better or at least on par with Plex). I know that this space is still severely lacking on #Apple TV and maybe the more obscure platforms like game consoles but I hope that changes soon enough
- Media files in symlink dirs not being served/discovered: still an issue for me, but likely not an issue/necessary use case to most people. It did work on Plex tho which was nice
- Metadata management: is a little confusing at first compared to Plex which was more PnP, but there are guides out there (including my own) that gets you set up once and you're golden forever
Otherwise, everything else dats straight up better:
- Insaneeeee wealth of custom plugins that's straight up upgrades your Jellyfin server for the freaking better in any aspects you could think of
- Skip intro support in all clients and it just freaking works
- Hardware transcoding support for absolutely free
- Downloads for offline viewing a la #Netflix and such on your mobile clients, for free, and it actually works (unlike Plex). You could even choose the quality, audio, subs etc. to download for your media
- Being able to still access your Jellyfin server and watch content 'online' when there's no internet cos it's completely local - unlike Plex OOTB
- User management is a lot simpler since it's local, with plenty of customisation support like enforcing age rating on media per-user etc.
- Able to login using a randomly generated code from any of your logged in devices - set a 'PIN' even for each 'profile' on your TV a la Netflix
Plenty more, honestly. -
