  1. Prior to his winning the White House in 1828, Andrew Jackson wound up in quite a few questionable melees, confrontations, and duels. But none was more pointless than his wild 1813 fracas with future United States Senator Thomas Hart Benton.

  2. I have a new post over at @RacketNews about the supercharging of the spoils system during the Jackson administration, and what lessons that teaches us to prepare for the period of chaos as Trump emulates the seventh President.

  7. We deserve better than this a nation. They are saying dangerous things with their little sound bites and clips.

Pass this on - and for gods sake news people PLEASE PRESS THEM ON THIS.

  8. Why am telling y'all a story that happened 200 years ago?

Cuz Trump & his supporters are using Jackson's quote to campaign 200 years later!

Every time you hear someone say that quote: “John Marshall has made his decision; now let him enforce it", I want y'all to remember WHY he said it.

He meant if the Supreme Court made a ruling that a state or even the President didn't like or agree with, they didn't have to abide by it.

  9. At any rate, Georgia ignored the decision, did not free Worcester and others, and looked to the feds to remove the Cherokee people.

In 1838, the US military showed up and forcibly removed people from their houses and forced them on the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma.

  10. That's where the Andrew Jackson quote comes from, and *why* he said it.

"John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it".

Historians are not sure he actually said that, but instead said this to Brigadier General John Coffee:

"The decision of the supreme court has fell still born, and they find that it cannot coerce Georgia to yield to its mandate."

  11. quick summary:

1827: Cherokee Nation adopted written constitution
1828: Gold found near Dahlonega, Cherokee Nation
    1829: Andrew Jackson becomes president
1830: Georgia passes law "abolishing" the Cherokee nation & requiring US citizens to get a license to live on Cherokee land
1831: Supreme Court declines to hear Cherokee Nation v. GA
1832: Supreme Court rules Indian nations are not subject to state law, Worcester v. GA.

  12. Well, they passed laws saying the Cherokee government was abolished and all their citizens were subject to the laws of Georgia.

Another law passed in 1830 required non-Cherokee citizens to obtain a state license to live on Cherokee Land.

This is when the Cherokee Nation took their case to the Supreme Court in Cherokee Nation v. GA in 1831.

  13. But he said something that I now believe is a Republican talking point, and it is dangerous AF y'all. And you need to pay attention.

He was responding to a question from George Stephanopoulos. S. asked Vance since he's been mentioned as a potential running mate for Trump, would he have certified the 2020 election.

After a truly dizzying logical fallacy laden response, he quoted Andrew Jackson.
