El economista Alan Greenspan, quien presidió la Reserva Federal de Estados Unidos (Fed) durante casi dos décadas, falleció este lunes a los cien años de edad.
La noticia fue confirmada por su esposa, la periodista Andrea Mitchell, corresponsal principal de asuntos exteriores de NBC News, con quien compartió 29 años de matrimonio.
Greenspan fue considerado una de las figuras más influyentes de la política económica internacional durante el final del siglo XX y los primeros años del siglo XXI.
Lideró la Fed por casi dos décadas
Durante su trayectoria al frente de la Reserva Federal, ocupó el cargo bajo las administraciones de cuatro presidentes estadounidenses y completó cinco mandatos consecutivos.
Su gestión coincidió con acontecimientos de gran relevancia internacional, incluidos el fin de la Guerra Fría, la expansión de la globalización económica y el crecimiento de la economía digital.
Bajo su liderazgo, Estados Unidos registró un prolongado periodo de expansión económica entre 1991 y 2001, impulsado por avances tecnológicos y el fortalecimiento de los mercados financieros.
Defensa del libre mercado
A lo largo de su carrera, Greenspan defendió los principios del libre mercado y la autorregulación económica, ideas influenciadas por la filósofa Ayn Rand, con quien mantuvo cercanía intelectual durante su juventud.
