  1. And here the gentleman who decided to block out path today. As you can see, we ended up leaving the trail to walk around him, assuming this was better for everyone, including the nature... (this was not in the National Park but in an area frequented by people and cattle so leaving the trail was OK).

One photo is no zoom, the other 3x...

  2. There are less than 10000 Andean condors, the largest birds of prey, left in the world. They live up to 70 years, pair up for life and care for their chicks for years... Absolutely amazing (and very ugly when being face to face with them as happened to us today on a hiking trail 😅) birds!

Today, we had the luck to see four of them (partially very, very) close - three in this video.

  3. @PatriciaPhotos for anybody visiting the south of #Peru I highly recommend the Colca Canyon near #Arequipa. One of the best places to see the #andeancondor stunning landscapes and hot springs. Just don't hike those paths alone as a simple misstep may convert you into condor food as the population density is low and there might be nobody to hear and rescue you until it's to late 😅 #nature

This will be the first of several brief posts I’m planning to migrate over from the now-defunct Animal Toy Forum Walk-arounds section. The posts were originally just intended as walk-arounds on the forum so I don’t have much to say in addition to the photos, or if I do have thoughts, I don’t have the time to articulate my comments […]

  5. "Not everyone is lucky enough to have this bird in their country (...) we must love it."

Andean condors are truly majestic, amazing birds, and perform vital ecosystem and human health services. It gives me a lot of hope today to see family farmers embracing their condors and seeing them as the helpful neighbors they are.

  6. Today is International Vulture Awareness Day. 🖤 🤍 ❤️ 🥰

Not every bird is tiny and cute. Not every bird sings a beautiful song. But we love vultures just the same, including their grunts, hisses, and clacks (they don't have a syrinx, so they can't sing like other birds). Without them, the world would be a messy place with dangerous diseases spreading everywhere. Nature made vultures her cleanup crew and gave them stomach acid with a pH of 1 to destroy things like rabies, anthrax, and botulism. When vultures are killed or die off, feral dogs often take their place, and disease (especially rabies) begins to spread.

Vultures are beautiful birds. They are clean and love to bathe as often as possible and preen after every meal. They mate for life and are wonderful parents. To watch them soar is to see beauty on the wing.

Below is an #IVAD poster created to honor Andy N. Condor, one of the greatest ambassadors for vulture you could ever imagine. He had a long life with many friends, passing away just two weeks ago.

We will miss you, Andy. Soar high on the thermals, look down on us, and keep us safe. 🖤 🤍 🖤 💗 💚 🌈 🌈 🌈

  7. I am so sad 😢 😭 Andy N. Condor, the beloved Andean Condor and Vulture Ambassador at Tracy Aviary in Utah, has passed away at the age of 64 of natural causes. He was active up until his very last day, taking walks with visitors and interacting with other birds (especially Chewie, the black vulture) and his keeper and best friend, Helen Dishaw. He lay down to sleep that night, and quietly passed on.

This is the announcement that was written on his Facebook page by Helen, who is devastated. She once said this is the price we will eventually have to pay for loving an animal, but we love them anyway.

By the way, I'm proud to be the one who told her of the legend "Once the condor enters your life, it will never leave." She used it in Andy's obituary, and it's so true.

Soar high on the thermals, Andy. We will meet again. 🖤 🤍 🖤 💗 💚 🌈

  8. Andy N. Condor, his best friend Helen Dishaw, and lilacs... what's not to love? Look at them smiling at each other! 🥰

The photographer is probably a member of the Tracy Aviary staff.

  9. Andy N. Condor of Tracy Aviary is here to remind everyone of a wonderful Andean legend: "Once the condor enters your life, it will never leave."

We hope not, Andy. You have made friends for condors and vultures all over the world. 🖤

Photographer — probably Helen Dishaw; if not, then a member of the Tracy Aviary staff.

  10. For Valentine's Day from Tracy Aviary and Andy N. Condor...

    You are Condor-able! 🖤 🤍 🖤 💗 💚 😘 🥰

Look at Andy's sparkling green eyes! Only the male Andean Condors have that color; the females have deep red eyes.

The Aviary did not give the photographer, although they often use Dee Otter, Cassandre Crawford, or Joel Sartore for special photos. Then again, it's just as likely a staffer took this beautiful picture.

  11. Happy 64th Birthday to Andy N. Condor at Tracy Aviary! 🥩 (Andy doesn't eat cake, but like all vultures and condors, he does love meat)

Andy is taking a walk with Helen Dishaw, his best friend in the whole world. 🖤 🤍 🖤 💗 💚

The Photographer is unknown. Might be an Aviary staffer, might be a visitor.

  12. A close-up of Andy N. Condor, who lives at Tracy Aviary in Utah. The fleshy caruncle (comb) on his head and his green-gold eyes give away the fact that he's a male. In fact, the caruncle is present upon hatching.

The photograph was not credited, but my best guess is that it was taken by Helen Dishaw, Andy's keeper and BFF.
