Love "When I was a ship," a fan song for Ann Leckie's ANCILLARY JUSTICE, sung from the POV of the ship Justice of Toren, reduced to the single-bodied person Breq. #FanArt #ImperialRadch #AncillaryJustice
"When I was a ship, when I was a weapon, when I wasn't configured to ask any questions ... when I was a sword, when I was reliable, when I was the hand, when I was pliable..."
So, so good.

Book Review – Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie
My first book of 2025 is the second book I’ve read by author Ann Leckie. Both books, Translation State and Ancillary Justice, are set in the same world of the Imperial Radch series, though the stories are not directly connected. Reading Translation State led me to Ancillary Justice, the first book of Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy, and I am eagerly looking forward to book two.
Ancillary Justice introduces us to Breq, a soldier, at least that’s how they present themselves. In reality, Breq is the last surviving ancillary of Justice of Toren, a destroyed warship of the Radch, and is on a mission of vengeance, one which will immensely change the empire, either in success or failure.
Characters like Breq, the last fragment of an artificial intelligence over 2000 years old now contained in a human body, and Seivarden, a former Lieutenant on the Justice of Toren a thousand years ago. Both are fish out of water, Breq as an AI trying to pass as human and Seivardan, a human a thousand years out of time who has lost everything. These two do need each other, though, of course, neither knows or believes it for some time, and their shared journey throughout the book, along with Breq’s back story, is compelling on its own.
Ancillary Justice has the distinct honor of earning the Hugo Award, Nebula Award, and the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the only book to do so. I can see why and I think you will, as well. I completed the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and I look forward to reading the rest of this one.

I started #AncillaryJustice by #AnnLeckie because it was on a list of books that were said to be similar to #StarWars: #Andor. The resemblance is interesting.
In a space fairing collection of civilizations, the #Radch rules as an empire over others. Power is gained by the "illbred" by #colonizing land not already controlled by the Radch, a tale at least as old as the #RomanEmpire.
At some point, the technology to create Ancillaries. An #ancillary is a human that is under AI control. In this future, slave drivers directly control slaves without freewill creating conflict: an absolutely unrelatable concept that does not strike fear into my heart/s.
The protagonist, #Breq, was once an #AI that controlled a ship and many ancillaries. Something caused the destruction of her ship and the deaths of all of her ancillaries but the one they inhabit now. Breq is on a quest to kill the person who destroyed her ship, the Lord of the Radch, which doesn't sound at all like Lord of the Reich/s.
It is a fun space opera. For me, the shear revolutionary joy of Andor that it might have is blurred by the strangeness of the #Radchaai culture, which I did enjoy.
I am reading the #AncillarySword now. The #spaceopera is an excellent #diversion.

Just finished Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice trilogy. Hugely enjoyable. Science fiction’s ability to present different possibilities is so welcome & her AIs are very much more nuanced than present debate would allow.
It is one of the reasons I love Iain M Banks’ Culture world - the AIs were the quirky stars of his novels!
PS please don’t @ me with a flood of techie detail!

I finished #reading #AncillaryJustice by #AnnLeckie today. This was a phenomenal book with great characters. It ended in a place that was very surprising to me, so I’m eager to see where it goes from there. The other books are on my wish list. I want to thank @dragonqueen for the recommendation.

I'm almost half way through #AncillaryJustice by #AnnLeckie now. I've been enjoying it so far. The time split and perspective split are interesting, giving a sense of different POVs even though I'm pretty certain they are not.
This is also the first #audiobook I've listened to with #LibroFM. So far the app has worked pretty much the way one would expect. Easy to get back to the audio. I do wish it would auto play when connected to Bluetooth, and it doesn't seem to honor BT media controls.

Just started reading the #AncillaryJustice series by @ann_leckie which blazes a new trail in the subgenre started by #MaryShelley with #frankenstein - the sympathetic yet also terrifying machine/cyborg/robot. I haven't been able to put it down

@womanontherun I liked The City We Became, read it last year, though there were some things I thought could be improved so I'm really curious about The World We Make.
As for the current favourite #SciFi author, I'll say #AnnLeckie. I really enjoyed #AncillaryJustice.

I've been reading #AncillaryJustice by #AnnLeckie, and the first half of the book was a hike, but I'm really starting to get into it as the social and political intrigue is ramping up.
