  1. Briefly joined the NWT #Nottingham group at Chilwell Dam Plantation, a fragment of ancient woodland on the edge of the city.

Particularly pleased to be see Sanicle in it's only known location in the city. A number of other Spring flowers were out: the odd Bluebell, Lesser Celandine, Dog's Mercury and (photos) Elm, Elder and Wood Anemone.

    - Removed over 15 acres of invasive species (Japanese knotweed, rhododendrons, bamboo and Himalayan balsam)

    - Run 5 free hedge-laying courses for Welsh farmers.

    - Working on 100 sites across England, Wales, and Scotland.

    - Never sold a single carbon credit to anyone.

  3. Nobody is paying for the ancient woodland restoration work @ProtectEarthUK do for small holders all over the UK.

We’re not special enough to access the elusive new ancient woodland restoration grants. That’s for fancypants with plenty of money already like the Dutchys and W* Trusts.

Instead you can sponsor the work directly by the sq. meter. Keeps us in loppers, saw blades, and volunteer biscuits. 🫡

  4. If you think we should spend less time creating new woodlands and more time restoring ancient woodland please put your money where your mouth is and sponsor ancient woodland restoration.

We’re in the process of buying our second degraded #AncientWoodland 🥳

  5. As much as I love woodland creation, my real passion for years has been ancient woodland restoration. My charity is hoping to acquire another 11 acres of ancient replanted woodland (PAWS) directly next to an existing bit of land we own, so I ask you: help us sponsor a few square meters, and I’ll get the job done. #AncientWoodland #ancientwoodlandrestoration #BiodiversityCrisis #ClimateAction shop.protect.earth/products/an

  6. This very stark picture perfectly captures the feeling of chaos that I felt while exploring this #AncientWoodland recently.

Sorry no ALT text: the dialog box for that is broken atm 🤦‍♂️

  7. Visited Combwell Woods at the weekend, in Kent (UK). It's an important site for bryophytes (which I know very little about). I left the ID-ing to the botanists and bryologists and stuck to enjoying the environment, admiring the harvestmen (and learning to key them out!), and taking a few photos. #Mosstodon #Opiliones #AncientWoodland

  8. Today, we are celebrating this year’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) #ForestDay #IntlForestDay theme ‘Forests and Innovation’. Thank you to all our authors and reviewers who continue to help us plant #nativetrees in the UK, and preserve and restore #ancientwoodland. forest.biologists.com/landscap

Alt text: A black a white line drawing cartoon, that shows tree stumps, and a sign saying THIS ANCIENT WOODLAND HAS MOVED (MOVED is underlined) beneath it says ‘we apologise for any inconvenience caused’

Stood next to the sign are two people dress in wildlife spotting attire.

  10. You can't """relocate""" an ancient woodland, get bent, stupid holiday homes, oh man I am furious, get out of here with this absolute trash!!

    Anyway donate to this crowdfunder.

  11. Running around the edge of an industrial estate in Alnwick, UK, is Cawledge Dene, which I had a wander down for the first time yesterday. Denes are a feature of this part of the world and are deep steep sided valleys cut by meltwater as the last ice age receded. They almost all contain ancient woodland, some maybe have trees from native stock, as they are generally inaccessible and no use for farming. #valley #landscape #AncientWoodland

  12. 🌳 40% of major new roads impact irreplaceable habitats like #AncientWoodland.

🛣️ Tell Government its policy for new transport schemes must protect irreplaceable habitats from #transport infrastructure.

  13. I've been searching for #AncientWoodland plants within walking distance, Wood Lane, a relict of #Cottingham's South Wood, did not disappoint, I only saw the small patches of Wood Anemones because a kind local pointed them to me

  29. My script for #AncientWoodland (emphasis on Welsh cases) based on local surveys 2014 to 2019. One of my conclusions was that landscape often classed as Welsh Ancient Woodland was often post-industrial woodland or land severely damaged by coal mining even though the coal mining or iron activities may have ended in the seventeenth century or earlier enabling the current recovered woodland to present as Ancient. #HistoricalGeography #IndustrialArchaeology #LandscapeHistory #PostIndustrialWoodland
