Wanted: editor Ancient Warfare

About twenty years ago, Jasper Oorthuys created the magazine Ancient Warfare. His financier also founded a publishing house, Karwansaray Publishers, where Oorthuys serves as managing director. Ancient Warfare was followed by other magazines: for medievalists Medieval World, for those interested in wargaming Wargames, Soldiers, Strategy, and for those with a general interest in Antiquity Ancient History (which I myself helped create). Karwansaray also began publishing books, ranging from magnificent volumes on key figures in European history to more informal publications on espionage in the Low Countries.

In short, Oorthuys became quite busy, and after twenty years, he is now looking for a successor for the first magazine. Ancient Warfare is therefore seeking a new editor. The requirements can be found here.

I’ve written regularly for Ancient Warfare myself and served as editor of Ancient History. The fact that I’m happy to give Oorthuys’ publishing house a shout-out means I’m happy to lend him a hand. The strongest recommendation, however, isn’t mine, but the fact that one requirement – which has gradually become standard for journalistic products – is absent: “ability to make artificial intelligence write an article.” Oorthuys isn’t blind to the new possibilities, but here is your chance to create a normal magazine without bot-generated nonsense.

Redacteur gezocht

Zo’n twintig jaar geleden richtte Jasper Oorthuys het tijdschrift Ancient Warfare op. Zijn financier richtte ook een uitgeverij op, Karwansaray Publishers, waarvan Oorthuys managing director is. Op Ancient Warfare volgden andere tijdschriften: voor mediëvisten Medieval World, voor mensen met belangstelling voor “war games” Wargames, Soldiers, Strategy, en voor mensen met algemene belangstelling voor de Oudheid Ancient History (dat ik zelf heb helpen oprichten). Karwansaray begon ook boeken uit te geven, variërend van schitterende boeken over protagonisten in de Europese geschiedenis tot wat informelere publicaties over spionage in de Lage Landen.

Kortom, Oorthuys kreeg het druk en na twintig jaar zoekt hij een opvolger voor het eerste tijdschrift. Ancient Warfare zoekt dus een nieuwe redacteur. De eisen leest u hier.

Ik heb zelf regelmatig geschreven voor Ancient Warfare en was redacteur van Ancient History. Dat ik graag even reclame maak voor Oorthuys’ uitgeverij, betekent dat ik hem graag even help. De grootste aanbeveling is echter niet de mijne, maar het feit dat de langzamerhand standaard geworden eis voor journalistieke producten ontbreekt: “de artificiële intelligentie een stuk laten maken”. Oorthuys is niet blind voor de nieuwe mogelijkheden, maar u hebt hier de kans nog eens een normaal tijdschrift zonder botshit te maken.
