“Lost [sic] archaeological sites have emerged in grasslands across Wales after a prolonged spell of hot and dry weather.
Wales has seen about 5% of the average rainfall for July, after a series of back-to-back heatwaves and a drier than usual April to June. A drought has also been triggered in parts of Wales.
Experts said these dry conditions have brought to light a range of hidden archaeological remains, including Roman buildings and practice trenches from World War One.
Many are only visible from the air as distinctive marks in crops and grass, with some not being seen for "two or three decades", according to the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales (RCAHMW).
The crop marks are made by vegetation drawing on better nutrients and water supplies trapped in long-gone fortification ditches - leading to green growth that stands out…”

We did find St Edith's Well in the end ...and I haven't seen one quite like this before ... but, believe me, we had to battle through some foliage and then there was an iron grate in front of it ... so I couldn't strip off and immerse myself in the water 🤪

Another day, another church!

Lots and lots of castles, forts, burial mounds, and churches in this area of the Welsh borderlands ... but today I went to seek out one of our few stone circles, imaginatively called 'Four Stones'.
Apparently, there may have been a 5th stone which is now the font in a local church, so went there too.

The #ClamGardens #RestorationProject has reclaimed #W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge, improved #ecosystems and provided the W̱SÁNEĆ Nation with additional funding.
From 2014 to 2019, #ParksCanada, the #W̱SÁNEĆNation and the #Hulquminum #FirstNations participated in the Clam Garden Restoration project.
Clam gardens are #AncientSites along shorelines in W̱SÁNEĆ territory that #Indigenous people tended for thousands of years to enhance the production of #clams and related sea creatures. Clams were an important source of protein for W̱SÁNEĆ people. The Clam Restoration project spent 5 years working to restore clam gardens in W̱SÁNEĆ territory. In addition to improving the #ecology of two clam gardens, the project also aimed to reclaim W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge, practices and culture related to clam gardens.

Here is the Stannon Stone Circle, nestled between streams on Dinnever Hill, 2.5 miles from Camelford. This ancient Cornish ring features 47 upright stones and dates back to the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Another #Avebury shot for #StandingStoneSunday from the largest stone circle in the world. It was a delight to be there again early this month with my old school friend, Lorne. The large bank and ditch were build around 4600 years ago with the stone circle being placed soon after that. For #StandingStoneSunday here’s a few more of the stones from Avebury in Wiltshire from my visit two weeks ago today. It’s an amazing place and well looked after by the National Trust, who have the difficult job of making the site accessible to the thousands of people that want to see it each year, but also protecting it from any erosion and damage. Despite the visitor numbers, it’s a place that maintains its magic. #StoneCircle #Avebury #wiltshire #magic #ancientsites #neolithic
