Book Review: Silk and Sensibility by Mengxi Seeley
Title: Silk and Sensibility
Author: Mengxi Seeley
Publisher: Shadow Mountain Publishing
Publication date: September 15, 2026
Genre: Historical Fiction
Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite novels. I love the story of Elinor and Marianne and their complicated romances. I’ve also been looking more for Chinese-inspired novels, and have been enjoying maybe way too many Chinese dramas over the past few years. Silk and Sensibility scratched an itch I didn’t know I had: a cross of Regency England with ancient China, apparently. While it wasn’t always a successful balance of the two all the way through, the story worked extremely well and was a delight to read.
Ailin and Meilin are the daughters of a famous Scholar and his second wife. Sadly, their father has just passed and their older half-brother has returned home to take charge, along with his wife, who despises the sisters, their younger sister, and their mother. In order to fund her mother’s nurse’s retirement, forced on all of them by the brother’s wife, Ailin attempts to sell part of her dowry, and instead gets the chance to paint for money. On her return home, Ailin and her maid encounter a student headed the same way, Fan Enze, the brother her sister-in-law has been expecting. Even though sparks fly, the sister-in-law would never condone a match and, when she suspects Ailin of taking her brother’s attention off his studies, Ailin’s mother decides to move herself and her daughters to another city, to live with her brother and his in-laws. There, Ailin gets the opportunity to paint and hope for Enze’s arrival with a proposal and Meilin falls in love with one of the tenants, playwright Wei Loubi, despite another tenant’s, Captain Bai, strong dissension. But instead of a smooth path to their happily ever afters, the sisters encounter love rivals, river pirates, and corrupt officials.
It may have been a while since I last read Sense and Sensibility, but I know this story. Ailin and Meilin were Elinor and Marianne. Their approaches to love were the same, their heartbreaks the same, and their determination just as strong. This influence on Silk and Sensibility is clear from the beginning. I was a little disappointed Meilin felt more like the impulsive Marianne than the dutiful daughter of a scholarly household, so sometimes it was hard to ignore the inspiration behind this story. There were also several instances where the original shone through a little brighter, where, for a brief moment, I felt I was a little more in Regency England than ancient China. While the story changed to fit the new world and time period, the plot points were hit, and it actually worked very well. Despite this sometimes feeling like the author leaned a little too much into the original, taking me out of ancient China now and then, the story did flow smoothly, and all the alterations to fit the new world didn’t detract or make it into something completely new and different.
This also reads a bit like an historical Chinese drama, and I sometimes felt like I could see the story playing out like one of them. I’m far from an expert on ancient China and the Ming Dynasty, but I can safely say it fit well with all the historical Chinese dramas I’ve watched. I wish there had been a little more to the corrupt officials like I usually see, but the inclusion was enough. This is, after all, a love story. What I loved most was that there were some passages where I could see it play out as though it were in a drama. There are things I’m used to seeing, and often expect to see, and I found those on the page. They’re just little things, but they always made me think this would make a great Chinese drama. As for the historical accuracy, I liked that foot binding and the structure of ancient Chinese families were included, and the river pirates were a fantastic addition.
As for the characters, they felt like their original counterparts. I had no idea how well Regency England and the Ming Dynasty would work, but their behavior and sensibilities were very similar, or close enough, so the characters managed to be completely recognizable and still fit the new world. Of course, there were times when Meilin’s character was a little jarring, and sometimes Grandmother Jiang felt a little too modern, but, for the most part, I found them to be very successful.
I found Silk and Sensibility to be a wonderful Chinese-inspired interpretation. The world felt vibrant and alive, and the story followed the original’s footsteps. While I sometimes felt more pulled into one world or the other, I found most of the novel to be nicely balanced. I would love to see this adapted into a Chinese drama because so many scenes felt so vivid in my mind. But I also just really enjoyed this and was sorry when it ended.
