  7. Spherical Earth (Cartography 🗺️)

Spherical Earth or Earth's curvature refers to the approximation of the figure of the Earth as a sphere. The earliest documented mention of the concept dates from around the 5th century BC, when it appears in the writings of Greek philosophers. In the 3rd century BC, Hellenistic astronomy established the roughly spherical shape of Earth as a...

  9. 12,000 years ago, people at Göbekli Tepe may have carved what is now believed to be the oldest solar calendar ever discovered.
Symbols on pillars — especially lots of “V” marks — might represent days, with special markings for the summer solstice.
If correct, this is a striking example of early humans observing the skies, measuring time, and encoding it in stone — long before writing as we know it.

  11. The Surprising Origin of Telescope
A strange device called the 'Dhruva Darshak Yantra' is found in an astronomical observatory called Jantar Mantar. Is it possible that this is the world's first telescope?

  12. 🌠🌠🌠
Archaeologists have discovered a 2,400-year-old stone map of the night sky in Italy. The map shows 29 stars carved on a circular stone, including Orion, Scorpius and Pleiades. The map is very accurate, except for one mysterious star that might have been a supernova or a black hole. 🌠🌠🌠

  14. New in the our #ISAWNYU open journal:

Huber, Peter J. “Third Millennium BC Chronology and Clock-Time Correction.” ISAW Papers 25 (2023). hdl.handle.net/2333.1/0cfxq1g1.

"The astronomical data available for fixing the third millennium BC Mesopotamian chronology are precarious. But surprisingly, if taken at face value they yield unique coherent chronologies for the Dynasties of Akkad and Ur III (about 50 years higher than ..."

  15. Here's a topic I haven't seen discussed of here (yet): the #AntikytheraMechanism.

How the ancient Greeks conceived of (much less fabricated) the Mechanism is, well, a mystery.

I made some notes about this fantastic device here: davidmeyer.github.io/astronomy.

The #LaTeX source is here: overleaf.com/read/ndpvkytkhmbv.

    As always, questions/comments/corrections/* greatly appreciated. #ancientastronomy #astronomy #LaTeX
