Sixth full-length with Ervin as leader, recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in 1963, for Prestige. Ervin is joined here by Jaki Byard (piano), Richard Davis (bass), and Alan Dawson (who was a drum instructor at Berklee in Boston) (drums).

This is the album that got me into Herbie Hancock. 🎹My aunt gave me this CD for Christmas when I was a kid. I’ve since lost that CD, due to going to college, getting an iPod, then an iPhone, then streaming and not caring about CDs/physical media, parents moved, stuff wasn’t saved, etc…

Fast forward to 2023 - at least 20 years later (don’t remember when it was initially gifted, but I’ve been out of college for 15 years, holy hell does time fly!) I started collecting physical media. First dipping my toes into records, and then CDs - and I have been on an absolute tear. Turns out I just like collecting things…you should see my stamps! 🤓

First I found the CD used, then a decent copy of the LP, and now just got the 45 RPM #AnalogueProductions pressing…and it’s glorious. Coupled with the new cartridge Santa (me) brought me this Christmas that I’m breaking in…it sounds pretty amazing. The only downside is setting down my drink and getting my lazy ass off my knock-off Eames Chair to flip it 3 more times.

I wholeheartedly recommend this album (in any medium) to anyone. Don’t think you like jazz? Give it a listen. Never heard anything funky? Give it a listen. Sit down in a quiet place or throw some headphones on. I challenge you to not tap a foot or bob your head.

Heard a lot of versions of this album, looking for the ultimate pressing and never quite without feeling something was lacking.

Until today, when I got the Analogue Productions' 2x45rpm to spin. To me, this is the best way to hear this quintessential album.

Detailed, balanced, with lots of headroom (usually everything's all over the place in this grand symphony of rock) and just the right amount of punch to it when needed. Bravo, guys!

Yes - Fragile (Atlantic 75)

Fragile makes yet another appearance, this time it’s the new, Analogue Productions, Atlantic 75, 45-RPM version, mastered by Kevin Gray.

Flat, quiet pressing of a really nice new mastering. Hard to believe this was recorded in 1971.

Stylistically, of course, it’s the same album as before, Yes’ breakthrough, and my favorite of theirs.

Just seen a review of the mono version of #TheDoors which prompted me to spin this.

LA Woman is still my favourite, but this has the best opening & closing track. And The End is unique & stunning.

This, the 45 by #AnalogueProductions is the one to have.

Sunday, snowbound, & #NowListening to #LAWoman by #TheDoors.

This, on balance, is my favourite #Doors album - Morrison, in particular, is on fire, & the overt blues roadhouse vibe is definitely my thing.

This is the reissue by #AnalogueProductions cut at 45. I don’t have anything with which to compare it, but Morrison growls, the guitar wails, & so it sounds plenty good to me.

The packaging, as always, is on point.

The line up is, once again, incredible, the set list nigh on perfect, with that irresistible swing that just makes you want to get up and dance.

Returned from a few days away, & I’m #NowSpinning #Steamin’ with the #MilesDavis Quintet from the recent repressed #Prestige batch from #AnalogueProductions.

As is typically the case with this series, this is a #KevinGray cut & sounds utterly sublime. I do have the 1989 OJC with which to compare & the AP wins out by a margin with greater punch, better tone on the horns & more space.

The pressing itself is flawless & the jacket high quality.

I have a real thing for the early Prestige mono series & this is a real favourite: #Coltrane is on fire across these sessions - yet never less than melodic.

This is the #KevinGray cut for the #AnalogueProductions reissue & the sound is lush, expansive, & yet natural. In particular, Coltrane’s tone is nailed down, centred, in the room - & the drums & bass thunder.

Chilling sipping fine rye & #NowSpinning #WaltzForDebby by the #BillEvans Trio.

Cliché, I know, but this is my favourite of his #Riverside output. So smooth, refined & the playing is melodic & nimble.

This, from the boxset by #AnalogueProductions, is cut at 45 by #KevinGray. My set is flawless, flat, dynamic, & ‘in the room’ real.

As a Trio, there is telepathy at work here, but I find myself leaning into the playing of #ScottLaFaro.

Start of the long weekend & I’m #NowSpinning #JohnColtraneWithTheRedGarlandTrio. I sometimes get lost with the later more experimental #Coltrane, but this #Prestige stuff is definitely my jam.

This particular album is suited to spring sunshine, good coffee, but still has enough edge to make me sit up & listen. I love #PaulChambers & here he smokes.

Latin #Jazz generally isn’t my thing (although I really, really enjoy #Afro by #CharlieParker - if that qualifies). However, this album has a vibe which is nigh on irresistible: great musicianship, melodic, iconic vocals & it grooves throughout.

After the debacle of #MUFC’s humiliation, I’m consoling myself with an Old Fashioned & #MilesDavis. I’m #NowPlaying #KindOfBlue, one of the greatest albums of all time.

This is the #UHQR from #AnalogueProductions cut at 33 by #BernieGrundman. My copy, unfortunately, has a pressing defect on the the first 30 seconds of Blue In Green. Otherwise this is immaculate, stunning, & oh so moving - bested only by the UHQR at 45 (which I also have).

Pairing blues crooner Witherspoon with jazz titan Webster might seem unusual, but Reprise was owned by Frank Sinatra, who loved both musicians, and no doubt put them together.

This #AnalogueProductions reissue is a revelation, a legit #audiophile reference recording. It's like listening to the master tape.

This is the mono AAA #AnalogueProductions cut at 45 by #KevinGray. I’ve played this a couple of times since it arrived & half-heartedly A-B-ed it against the stereo 45. Both sound incredible & are worth having, but I incline towards the (DSD sourced) stereo.

The mono is definitely punchier (*that* snare on Wouldn’t It Be Nice) with better bass - but this is an album which benefits from space & air.

Looking for a pick-me-up after a disappointing #MUFC result & so I’m #NowListening to #EverybodyDigsBillEvans by the #BillEvans Trio.

This is early Evans - #PhillyJoeJones on drums, #SamJones on bass, & it swings harder than Portrait which comes just a year later.

This is the 45 from the #AnalogueProductions Riverside collection boxset - one of the jewels in my #vinyl collection.
