When I picked up my Analogue 3D last year, I went on an eBay binge and picked up a bunch of old N64 games I always wanted.

Out of ~18 buys, I ended up with 2 obvious fake/bootleg carts, which I'm not going to play.

What should I do with them? 🤔

Some thoughts on the #Analogue3D:

It is very cool and sleek hardware (see my terrible photo with my original #OcarinaOfTime module) and can be a lot of fun if you want to have a mostly authentic #N64 experience on modern FullHD or 4K screen.

There are a lot of things to consider if you are willing to invest so quite a bit of money into this console:

• Despite being a #FPGA device the system is not open, so no #OpenFPGA in the future which would you allow other to #misterFPGA cores/systems (open alternatives: misterFPGA, #M64 and the #SuperStationOne).
• Some promised stuff is missing such as save states and play time recording.
• The official controller has to be bought if you don't plan to use an original N64 controller. the Wireless NSO N64 by Nintendo controller is not compatible.
• The official #8BitDo controller does not correctly emulate an N64 controller which can be problematic in certain scenarios involving the C buttons.
• Butchered PAL versions with less FPS /slowdown etc are still butchered.
• A few games do have compatibility issues (which are being worked on).
• HDMI-CEC support is broken and hasn't been fixed for weeks.
• Analogue seems to fulfilling orders in a quite random sequence.
• The integrated fan can be quite annoying/loud, especially for people sensitive for highly pitched noises.
• Don't forget about import taxes.
• No bluetooth audio, so your partner can "enjoy" the Yoshi Story soundtrack with you.
• Maybe emulation is good enough for you? 🤷
• Flash carts do at this work, just get/build a #SummerCart64. Emulators written for N64 hardware emulating other system do not work though.

Mein Gerät ist inzwischen auch da. Macht viel Spaß, gerade spiele ich Banjo-Kazooie (während gerade #BanjoRecompiled angekündigt wurde :ugly: ).

Ja, ist schon ein cooles Teil. Aber man muss das auch wirklich wollen. Ich persönlich versteh z.B. nicht, warum man sich das Teil holen will, um dann gammelige und teils langsame PAL-Versionen zu spielen. Ist auf jeden Fall cool die eigenen Module reinstecken zu können, aber wenn will ich dann auch die besten Versionen am Start haben, wie es vom damals Entwickler eigentlich intendiert war.

Versprochene Features fehlen nach wie vor, Lüfter kann recht laut werden, der offizielle Controller liegt nicht bei, der Preis und Versandkosten sind saftig, die Vertriebspolitik wirklich beschissen, Versand komplett durcheinander unabhängig vom Bestellzeitpunkt und seit Wochen ist HDMI-CEC beim Analogue defekt. Kommunikation von Analogue ist auch eher so auf Sparflamme. Und Fun-Fact: Einige Eingaben funktionieren mit dem offiziellen 8BitDo-Controller nicht, weil die C-Tasten eigentlich wie ein zweiter Analogstick funktionieren. Sowas dürfte eigentlich nicht bei dem Versprechen von Analogue nicht passieren.

Außerdem bekommt man ein Gerät, dass halt eben nicht offen ist (im Gegensatz zu den Vorgängern) und es wohl niemals werden wird. Wer offene FPGA-Hardware mit #N64-Support will, hat (bald) auch gute andere Optionen, wie z.B. die #SuperstationOne und das #m64

Today, I transferred my EverDrive 64 X7 from its stock red shell to a smoke grey color. I think this goes so well with the Analogue 3D of that same color.

It's already pretty late at night, but I just took a few more minutes to check out the EverDrive 64 X7.

Good news! My EverDrive arrived all set-up and ready with the latest bootloader installed, so it did work right out of the box with the Analogue 3D FPGA console! I just threw a bunch of .z64 ROMs on an SD-card and everything performed admirably. Even "large" games like Resident Evil 2 did load up within a few seconds. I like it!

After several weeks of shipping from Ukraine, my new EverDrive 64 X7 finally arrived today. I’m glad it did, but this took forever and was crazy expensive! Sadly, I even had to pay another 20€ in customs duties. EverDrive cartridges are usually awesome, but in this case, I gotta say the SummerCart 64 was a much better deal:

- SC64 is working flawlessly with the Analogue 3D, as well as original N64 consoles.
- It‘s much, much cheaper than the EverDrive at about half the price or even less!
- Extremely quick shipping without any additional cost! It only took 3 days to arrive!
- SC64 even included a quality SD-card to get started right away. EverDrive arrived empty, which is such a shame!

@cryptgoat @Turrican Ja, so ganz langsam vergeht mir auch der Spaß an EverDrives. Ich hatte das ED 64 X7 vor mittlerweile einem Monat für 168$ gekauft. Bisher habe ich immer noch keine gültige Sendungsnummer und auch keinen konkreten Termin. Das ist alles mega frustrierend.

Das SummerCart 64 wurde in nur drei Tagen geliefert und funktioniert tatsächlich tadellos im Analogue 3D.

#Analogue3D motivated me to fill the gaps in my N64 collection. Some games are hard to get and I'll settle for loose carts for those. But Ridge Racer 64 I got CiB for 25 EUR and I couldn't say no to that.

I really love how the Analogue 3D uses its controller lights to visualize the status of a firmware update. It's such an elegant and intuitive solution!

So... froh zero to eight original cartridges for the Nintendo 64. It's still kinda minuscule, but it is what it is.. my N64 collection. I'm still waiting for my EverDrive 64 X7, which I ordered three weeks ago. But with the help of the SummerCart 64, there are already plenty more games to enjoy on the big screen!

I've messed around a lot with classic N64 emulation in the past, but, I gotta say, using an FPGA hardware solution and authentic cartridges is SO MUCH better!

Since I want to take the Analogue 3D to a gaming party at New Year's Eve, testing it with the SummerCart64 continues. The flashcart supports NTSC, as well as PAL ROMs and it looks like savegames are also working as they should! It also perfectly works with the virtual memory expansion pack, controller pack and rumble pack. I'm also growing quite fond of the Analogue 3D's BVM crt filter.

To use with the Analogue 3D, I ordered an EverDrive 64 X7, as well as a SummerCart64. Earlier today, the first of these two - The SummerCart - arrived at my place and I just spent some time checking it out.

Fortunately, the cartridge was already on its latest firmware release, but it did need some software updates. Everything is looking pretty good, so far!
