I'm taking a short break from writing Jehovah's Witness horror to write a sword and sorcery tale. I'm not sure what's happening in my story yet, but am eager to find out! #AmWritingSFF #AmWriting

Another 751 words written this morning on the train to Edinburgh. That's me up to approx 3,750/90,000 words into a second fantasy novel in the same world as Fierce.

I'm writing a first rough pass of a new story just now, and I'm writing quickly to catch the bones of it. I know that, in this draft, all my characters speak much the same; I'm not worrying about this, I'll rewrite later to give them individual idioms, ways of speaking, gestures, senses of humour.

Do you do this in your first pass, or do your characters come to you already with their own idiosyncratic patterns of speech?

It's before dawn on the 7th of January; I've written 10,000 words of a story that I first started actually writing on the 1st of January. It's about a God, a very old dragon, and how you reform a really sick society. None of what I've written yet is very good, but I have the bones of the whole story, including a satisfactory ending.

I contributed an essay to this book, which is a collection of academic-type writings by Africans who write speculative fiction, on their influences and worldbuilding and such things. I particularly talk about how my research into pre-colonial African cultures inspired me to imagine a future without central governments, where technology has enabled direct democracy. While working on #ScoutAndShaman, #CerianAndVaranWar, and #GwenAndGrey, I made a conscious decision to limit my physical descriptions of the characters.

Gwen has red hair. Ashwan is "shorter than expected". Hitomi is very tall and has wings (and Claire would give her a run for her money in height). Grey is never actually described beyond the bauplan they are using at the time - and the fact that their preferred #Dragon form is huge. Tannis, Ava, or Estelle don't get described at all.

My reasoning is to allow my readers to create their own images of how the characters look.

Since then, I have (naturally) run off to #HeroForge, and created 3d models of how I imagine they look!

Except for Grey. I will never really be able to model them, because their form is so mutable.

I will not be sharing these models online, because I really do want my readers to be the people who decide what the characters look like.

The beginning of a story I tried to tell once before. One I #AmWriting once again.

A young man and his two siblings flee the wreckage of their magical martial arts dojo and the shadow of death chasing after them. Stuck now in a foreign land of merchants and mines, nothing is as it seems and no one is trustworthy.

But the Wylde School produced talented fighters first and foremost, and Isaiah Wylde is about to bet his future and his last two coins on his two fiery fists in a fight that he was never meant to win.
