  1. CW: Question for erotic / adult writers regarding SubscribeStar

Are any of you publishing with SubscribeStar?

Are there enough readers there to make it potentially worthwhile or do you find yourselves propping up their business by bringing new customers to them?

  2. CW: re: Kissing My Best Friend's Girlfriend - Library stuff

As mentioned above, I agreed to allow D2D to take my erotica to the libraries systems this time because they made it sound like it would be ok. Though I've been wary of that and have not previously sent my erotica to the library systems.

Guess who just got a "we detected erotica in your erotica tagged book so we're not sending it to the libraries" email? :blobcatrollingeyes: :googlyeye: :googlyeye2:

There's nothing I need to do unless I care to argue that the erotica I wrote as erotica and tagged as erotica is not, in fact, erotica.

Setting this public and tagging it to save anyone else the irritation.

  3. CW: Erotic Musings, Week 33 - Craft: Is creating erotica erotic?

Is creating erotica an erotic act in itself?

    I think so.

What part, if any, does your own arousal play in creating or evaluating your work?

Evaluating, probably not much. But creating? It's definitely a factor. If it's not something I'm interested in, I'm going to have a harder time writing it. In some cases, I may not write it at all. I'm the first reader for all of my fiction. Whether I'm interested in something may not guarantee that anyone else is but if I'm not? It's hard to believe that someone else will be either.

  4. Delving into some historical erotica reminded me of a refrain I hear sometimes: that we should use technical terms even in our smut. I think we should use the full nuance of the language.

  5. CW: EroticMusings Week 9: Character

How important is it for characters to be distinct from each other? (visually, emotionally, other ways)

It kind of depends on what you're doing. If the character is an audience insert, you can probably be a little repetitive without it being too much of a problem. I've read an acre of stories where the real differences between the characters basically amount to what world they're in and what powers they have in it. That can work. It's just not what I'm doing.

Do you use any frameworks (e.g. astrology, MBTI, elements) or techniques to distinguish them?

No. I let the characters tell me who they are in the process of developing them and the process of telling their stories.

  6. CW: EroticMusings Week 8: Studio (reading erotica, long)

    Do you consume much erotica?

Yes, fairly regularly. It's a significant portion of what I'm reading at any given moment.

Is it similar to your work?

In some ways. Particularly in the fact that I'm writing stories with character development and plot.

Share your favourite works or creators!

Sure. Counting just the ones I can get at easily ... Paul Lucas, Cornelia Quick, Victoria Rush, Winter Lynx, and Ellie Wylde.

All of those are Smashwords links and most have titles discounted for the #Smashwords #SWSale2025 through July 31. @plucas1 and @corneliaquick are both on Mastodon. Paul has some stories under his name that aren't erotica.

  7. #PennedPossibilities 730: 2nd Anniversary Edition: Share a blurb, summary, or tiny snippet explaining your WIP to everyone in the hashtag.

From the Beware Of Fangs! synopsis:

Nicole has a strict 'no fangs, no women' policy when it comes to dating. Things go awry when she sees a gorgeous woman from across the bar and realizes her feet aren't touching the floor.

  8. CW: EroticMusings Week 6: Setting (long)

Do you prefer to work with constrained settings or expansive?

I'm not sure how to read that, really. The two main worlds I'm working with from the Hollerin accounts at the moment are the Tikud Empire setting and the Sylvestris world (Dryadis Romances). The Tikud Empire is a region of space that's very large and some of my planned stories will take place at least partly outside its limits. The Sylvestris setting happens generally within a few hours of the city of Sylvestris (counting realms like Fairy). I don't feel like either setting is constrained exactly beyond the implied limitations of the genre. (i.e. I'm unlikely to include magic in my SciFi setting and unlikely to include technology more advanced than present day in my fantasy setting.)

    Revisit locations or move on?

Overall, I've got a mix but I think at this point I have to admit I like establishing settings and then using the established settings ... a lot.

  9. CW: EroticMusings Week 5 - Culture

Culture: How does your work explore, challenge, and/or exploit gender stereotypes?

It's difficult for me to answer this because I don't really set out to do any of those things. I think they tend to happen incidentally because of who I am.

The Taking Command series challenges them in part by having different gender conceptions in the species that inhabit the Tikud Empire (and its surrounds). Don't Get Seduced By A Fairy! may theoretically challenge them in that Effluvia is the main instigator and Mike ends up being the primary caregiver to their child(ren). The things Beware Of Fangs! is exploring don't relate particularly to gender stereotypes but rather things I think we can all resonate with ... that happen to be happening in a fantastical setting.

  10. CW: EroticMusings Week 4 - Characters

Characters: Is your MC the kind of person you'd want a relationship with?

Oddly enough, I've dated people like both Nicole and Paige. I don't think I would today. (To be clear, I didn't develop them based on exes. When I saw the question, I realized they had personality similarities to people I have dated in the past. Except in limited cases involving satire of public figures, I don't base characters on real people.)

How would they feel about you?

I don't think either of them would give me a second look. :blobcatgiggle: Which is fine. I generally date people older than I am. I'll go a bit younger than I am today but not 20+ years younger. Not a value judgement. If it's not dating someone who 'just turned eighteen', the age gap by itself is mainly an issue when combined with extremely uneven power dynamics.

  11. CW: EroticMusings Week 3 - Studio

Is your work in erotica integrated with your day-to-day life and work, or somewhat separate?

My roommate, my friends, and some of my former colleagues know I write smut. I've been releatively open about that with those folks. My family don't know but some of them could probably guess. Since I'm ... self-employed and what little money coming in is coming from publishing erotica / erotic romance, I'd say it's currently fully integrated. :blobcatgiggle:

  12. CW: EroticMusings Week 2 - Craft

Craft: Do you intentionally experiment with new techniques?

Yep. I'm experimenting with a less neutral 3rd person narrator in Beware Of Fangs!.

Share an example! (If you want to.)

From the first two paragraphs of Beware of Fangs! as it currently exists:

One Friday night a year ago in a town called Morrow, Nicole @@nLast@@ sat in a restaurant waiting for Luke to return from the restroom. She felt a tension in the air but couldn't figure out what was causing it. The restaurant was called @@restaurantName@@ and it had a bar that could get pretty lively on weekends especially but it was quiet that night.

Out of towners would have considered Morrow a part of Silvestris. Silvestris was a medium sized city but it was the largest city in the area. Morrow was a little town nestled near the oldest parts of Silvestris. Those who lived in Silvestris or Morrow could tell would say the places weren't the same though the lines were blurred sometimes.

    Enjoy the placeholder text. :blobcatgiggle:

  13. CW: EroticMusings Week 1 - Setting (mild smut talk, long)

Is sexuality suppressed or celebrated in your setting?

I have two main settings for smutty work right now. Dryadis Romances which is an urban fantasy setting and Tikud Empire (current series: Taking Command).

Dryadis is pretty contemporary with our world but with vampires, werewolves, elves, wood spirits, and fairies. The people tend to have a much more relaxed attitude about sexuality and gender than in the U.S. at least.

The Tikud Empire setting has a lot of different cultures represented. The main human cultures have been subjected to a fascist party known as the Unconquered but they were conquered by the Tikud. The culture hasn't recovered so there is still a lot of suppression.

Is the setting erotic in its own right?

Neither setting as a whole but the lead for Taking Command is in a pretty erotic situation. She's accidentally freed herself of the confines of the Unconquered and one of the expectations that her new commanders have is that she will start poly relationships with people who will contribute to her missions. (And I'll take this moment to say that the Tikud are still operating an empire. Empires are bad. Ellis could be working for worse people but the Tikud are not 'the good guys.' :blobcatgiggle: )

  15. CW: EngenderedWriting Is gender disparity a thing in your stories? (gender dynamics in a SF erotica series, long)

Not in a way that's obvious yet. In the Etiquette Empire, the Tikud have an interesting gender dynamic. The people who humans would perceive as "men" are typically pursued by those perceived as "women." (I think it's important to mention that western concepts of gender were invented specifically as a part of the colonial effort. There's no reason for us to be beholden to them let alone alien species. Thanks to Amazon, I'm somewhat limited in what I can do with that in a publishable work.)

There's a bit more going on with the Tikud and I'll explore it in future books. As a tease, Es'sheel pursuing women to join his retinue is considered transgressive. Him having relationships with other men isn't considered unusual or even interesting. The fact that one of his wives pursued and married a woman who herself has no relationship with the Emperor is also not unusual.

The humans have been living in a repressive regime, The Unconquered, until they were conquered by the Tikud. The Tikud are a less repressive regime but loyalists to the old state are still trying to enforce the mores of the Unconquered. In the military, the Unconquered see men and women as equals and they're expected to conform to strict rules about relationships. The Unconquered tolerate homosexuality as long as it isn't discussed openly. They have no tolerance for queerness or transness but what they are able to do while ruled by the Tikud is limited.

I'm chomping at the bit to talk about the Fezjh but it would be a spoiler for something that's probably going to happen at the end of book two so I'll leave that be for now.

  18. CW: masturbation mention

Went for a skinny dip with a pal after work, talked about sex, got a little turned on. 😇

Came home and began outlining a new Fern River Club scene in which four naked people masturbate together outdoors.

  21. I worked on adding tags to the Fern River Club site last night, and included some provisional tags on the season 1 scenes. I like the idea of tags highlighting sexy themes that link the scenes together differently than people and places. “Self love”, for example, and “social nudity”.

What kinds of tags do you like to see on erotic stories? What subtleties feel exciting to highlight?
