Il Norge, col suo equipaggio multinazionale di 16 persone (fino a 21 nelle tappe intermedie), transitò sul Polo geografico il 12 maggio 1926, diventando il primo mezzo aerea a compiere tale impresa documentata e certa. Per quell’ultima tappa da primato, il dirigibile progettato da Nobile era partito dalle isole Svalbard l'11 maggio 1926, per poi atterrare in Alaska il 14 maggio.
Il 10 aprile 1926, il dirigibile semirigido Norge (il progetto originario N1 di Nobile) era decollato da Roma per la trasvolata del Polo Nord, finanziata dall'americano Lincoln Ellsworth e guidata da Amundsen, con Nobile come progettista e comandante.
La spedizione dimostrò che il Polo Nord era una distesa di ghiaccio marino e non un continente sommerso, confermando la superiorità tecnica dei dirigibili semirigidi italiani per l'esplorazione artica
I contrasti successivi
Nonostante il successo, i rapporti tra Nobile e Amundsen si deteriorarono rapidamente dopo l'impresa, trasformandosi in una faida personale e pubblicaLa contesa sui meriti: Amundsen, considerandosi il vero capo della spedizione, vedeva Nobile come un semplice "autista" o tecnico di servizio, ritenendo che il pilota italiano non avesse titolo per rivendicare l'impresa o trarne guadagni
La rivalità tecnica e politica: Nobile, dal canto suo, sosteneva che fosse la sua tecnologia e la sua abilità di pilotaggio a rendere possibile il volo, definendo Amundsen un "passeggero" illustre ma passivo.
Questa tensione fu alimentata anche dal contesto politico del tempo, con il regime fascista italiano che fece del Norge un simbolo di prestigio nazionale, esaltando la figura di Nobile e promuovendolo al grado di generale
Il dramma dell'Italia e la riconciliazione tragica
I contrasti sembrarono superati nel 1928 quando Nobile organizzò una nuova spedizione, questa volta interamente italiana, con il dirigibile Italia. Dopo aver raggiunto il Polo, il dirigibile si schiantò, lasciando un gruppo di sopravvissuti (compreso Nobile) intrappolati sulla banchisa nella famosa "Tenda Rossa"Nonostante le aspre polemiche passate, Amundsen si offrì immediatamente per organizzare e partecipare ai soccorsi, mettendo da parte ogni rancore
Il 18 giugno 1928, mentre sorvolava il Mare di Barents a bordo di un idrovolante Latham 47 alla ricerca dei naufraghi, l'aereo di Amundsen scomparve senza lasciare traccia, tranne alcuni rottami ritrovati successivamente.La sua morte fu accolta come una tragedia nazionale in Norvegia e segnò il destino di due dei più grandi esploratori del XX secolo, uniti dalla gloria e poi dalla tragedia artica. La vicenda si concluse infatti con il salvataggio dei superstiti dell'Italia grazie a una vasta operazione internazionale, ma lasciò Nobile in Italia sotto l'onta di accuse e l'opposizione del regime fascista, costringendolo all'esilio prima in Unione Sovietica e poi negli Stati Uniti, prima di poter tornare in patria e riabilitare la sua immagine solo dopo la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.

Its where #Amundsen took #Fram and set up base for his successful round trip to the pole. It was also mind-meltingly spectacular. We got to around 78o 40'S and took a temperature-salinity profile. Why wouldn't you do all you can to preserve this planet?
