Through-to-Vancouver heavy rail service is out north of Seattle due to flooding. Scheduled to return Saturday. CascadiaRail to Vancouver, basically.

According to Sound Transit's website, however, Sounder commuter rail service is still scheduled to run at this time. (2:45pm 10 December)

[012] Normally, the view from the #train window of a classification yard is obscured by freight cars on neighbouring tracks. From the back of the #AmtrakCascades looking towards a pumpkin-coloured mountain is nice. This is near Vancouver, Washington.

[007] #Washington is the Evergreen state, but the BNSF and UP locomotives you'll see running south of #Seattle will be autumn colours at all times of the year. Viewing these #trains from the #CoastStarlight or #AmtrakCascades in November, they fit right in with the scenery.

I'll be starting a series of posts on my #Amtrak #CoastStarlight trip, which happened around this time last year. For anyone in Canada that still wants that room temperature outside feel, #LosAngeles #California is a nice place to go in Nov.

[001] From Vancouver, B.C., the first #AmtrakCascades train does not arrive in time to connect at Seattle, so I have to take the CanTrail (or Can't Rail, if you will) bus at 5:30am in the morning. The roads weren't busy so it's not bad for a 2.5h bus ride.

This train is led by an older F40PH cab. A Siemens Charger locomotive unit is pushing Horizon passenger cars from the back.

Fun little thing about riding the #AmtrakCascades south from #Vancouver #Canada:

US Pre-boarding and Canadian Arrival clearance and customs checks both occur here at Vancouver Pacific Central Station. That's why the #Amtrak platform is securely fenced off, unlike #ViaRail and Rocky Mountaineer Platforms.

So, the Bellville ferry terminal in #VictoriaBC is being upgraded to have US CBP preclearance for the Coho (to Port Angeles) and the Clipper (to Seattle) but what would be awesome would be a passenger ferry to #BellinghamWa's Fairhaven terminal, which is right next to the #AmtrakCascades train station. Especially if it had code share and checked baggage going straight between the ferry and the train.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (#WSDOT) released a Preliminary Service Development Plan (SDP) for #AmtrakCascades, a step towards creating a blueprint for improving the route over the next twenty years.

Check out these preliminary alternative service diagrams!

While this is not true #HighSpeedRail, these are very important incremental improvements to speed & frequency that will make a big difference in the near term.

Over the past day I've seen a bunch of news about federal #HighSpeedRail grants, but no official announcement from the DOT yet.

So far I've seen:
* $3B for #California #HSR
* $3B for #BrightlineWest (#LasVegas to LA)
* $1B for #Raleigh NC to #Richmond VA
