How did the last two months go in terms of my word count or publishing goals?

Not so good. But I have a new laptop all set up (okay, nearly all set up) with thrice as much space as before (3 TB! yay!).

Bonus tech support: my friend Darrell also has a new computer all set up and didn't lose any time on ebay.

I'm listening to Yellowface by R.F. Kuang (I've read it before) and it's really motivating, oddly).

Have I written a summer story/written a character who needed remedial classes? How about summer school?

I haven't written someone who needed extra help.

There are folks who change course midstream and want to graduate on time like me (I worked summers I took classes--at Cornell Dining or at the CS dept).

Others need a boost because of outside life factors.

These are good tension-adding factors.

It's been a good day for ideas.

If you're a writer, I'd expect one of the questions you're most often asked, from friends, family, or pretty much anyone you talk about your writing with, is "where do you get your ideas from?"

If you're anything like me, ideas are the easy part. I've been logging them for 20+ years. Most are not good enough to stand on their own, but could be combined to make a good story. Some can carry a story on their own. A few are strong enough to be the basis for an entire series.

When I finish my second fantasy trilogy, in about a month's time, I'll be returning to the protag from my first novel and taking him out for some new SF thriller adventures. I already have five stories worked up for him and his daughter. I've also outlined around a dozen horror tales, probably novella length. So at the speed I write, I have enough ideas to keep me going until I'm around 90.

What better day, then, to have 2 more great ideas for the SF guy pop into my head, each easily as good as any of the 5 I had planned. Looks like I'll now be writing 'til I'm 95 🙄

Q1. Giving a character a fun hobby or a side interest gives them:
- something to think/worry about in slow moments
- something to compare stuff to
"this is just like programming a convention, except ..."
"trying to figure this out is just like laying out Drunkard's Path for a quilt block ..."
- an excuse for having some weird equipment for another plot purpose
- something you can describe them doing!

Doing some plotting while the rain hammers down outside. My 2022 NaNoWriMo ended up as a stew of 'random unrelated events as I thought of them'. Time to give it some structure! Writing people is so much harder than llamas..

A plotting day #today, and on to Book #6, the final book of the second trilogy. I like to intersperse drafting with a bit of plotting to keep things fresh.

All those copious notes I made while staring out at the beautiful Norwegian coast during our sailing expedition in January are now coming home to roost, meaning I was able to complete all of Step 4 (main story arc), and the first four (of 14) Step 5s (character arcs) today. Another good day. I can't call it a habit yet, but I haven't made this much progress, this early in either a draft or a plot, for a long, long time.

After threatening yesterday to start work on the plot for book #6 (in lieu of drafting #5), this morning I uncovered a reason to make a change to book #4, which thankfully is still sat on the starting blocks waiting on my cartographer to deliver the new maps.

Phew. A moment of complete serendipity (followed by one of strange serenity).

At this point I'd normally claim "procrastination FTW!!" but it was externally enforced procrastination, so it doesn't really count. Still, I'll take it.

I've also rediscovered all those plot notes I made while staring out at the Norwegian coastline from the library aboard MS Maud. Some really good stuff. The serenity there must've agreed with me too. Maybe that's the watchword for today?

Spent last evening in the hotel bar trying to create a rational religion. Ended up with more of a 'education guild' or ecclesia. The good news is that the schools are free. #amplotting

Of course he'd climbed it. Everybody did. Up onto the nave and along to where it met the tower, then up the wrist thick iron chain to the spire to peer through the jagged hole into the tiny room at the top. Both chain and the iron spike it was attached to had been renewed several times. The room though. That was old, old as the tower. Even the fervid imaginations of the students couldn't conjure a way into that cold stone abscess from below. #amplotting #amwriting

An idle thought earlier has percolated into the start of a story. Five sorcerer's towers are all that's left of a brief devastating war that consumed their owners. Nine centuries later, the largest is half a cathedral, one the keep of a castle, one a prison, a lighthouse etc. An unnoticed part of the fabric of the coastal city of Tinte. But the worshippers in the cathedral are few now, prayer and binding may not be strangers, and the red tower is in thier dreams. #amplotting #amwriting

I am currently 65k in my 90-100k planned revision. I can feel myself wanting to run. Which is why I'm gonna stop now for today, think instead about what the story really needs, rather than what is easiest.

Sometimes, the best writing advice is to not write at all.

I have been reading John Yorke's Into the Woods and I found that my Work in Progress turns out to follow his Five Act Structure. !!

Particularly if I change my mind about exactly what is the real turning point of the story.

ATM I loosely outline and do a loose first draft - second draft work to a tighter plan. I can conceive now plotting more.

Es gab unlängst einen Newsletter vom #NaNoWriMo: "I've written a novel. Now what?" Zugegeben, ich hab letzten November "geschummelt" und ein #Sachbuch geschrieben. Aber es war auch das erste Mal, dass ich, noch während der NaNo lief, auf "veröffentlichen" gedrückt habe. Und jetzt schreib ich grad am nächsten - diesmal tatsächlich #Roman. Hm.
