Finished #FireEmblem: Path of Radiance. As I've been told these past twenty years, it's really good across the board. Ike's growth throughout the story, the exploration of laguz/beorc relations, the actual gameplay, the writing, pacing. All of it was fantastic.
Except you, Oscar. You sucked.

Anyway, I started playing #SakuraWars 2! Happy to hang out with this lovely cast again, even though Soletta's "Italian" accent is killing me.

Halfway through #ValkyrieProfile and so far it's living up the high expectations. First chapter or so was a little touch and go, but once things click into place, they click hard.

Spent an hour on, like, figuring out what to do at the second #ValkyrieProfile boss. It was clear I needed bows but had none and the short bow I supposedly found earlier was gone (broken?). In the end I found the menu option Divine Item allows you to craft gear at a save point. This was exhausting, lol.

Finished #HollowKnight #Silksong! Great game, well worth the wait. I only wish I'd found the Wanderer Crest before late Act 2 and that exploration in Act 3 wasn't such a pain. All in all, superb game.

This month I played three spoopy games: Paranormasight, Resident Evil (Remake) and Silent Hill. I didn't particularly vibe with REmake, especially its first half. Silent Hill, on the other hand, was absolutely superb.

Finished #Lufia2 last night. Loved the unconventional dungeon designs, the overall pacing, the music and that ending in particular. It has soul and it's a classic for a good reason.

Paused my #Lufia2 playthrough to give the #TrailsInTheSky1st demo a spin. It's really impressive in every regard and I hope it'll do well.

Just finished Transiruby, along with a 9k-line journal file for it. I almost got 100, but not quite; I don't have time to go back to it before the semester starts though.
If you like exploration games, it's an excellent one, with great level design & tons of secrets. It actually makes you do significant secret-finding and map-reading in order to beat the game, not just for extras or a special ending, which is something that a lot of metroidvania games since Super Metroid don't do. My one complaint is that the map system isn't perfect, and finding obscure secrets to progress is fine when the map hints at them but much less fun when it hints incorrectly (I looked one progress item up in a speedrun video because of this).
Decently cool movement mechanics, although the combat does take a back seat and almost all of the bosses are easy (I beat the final two bosses in the third and second tries respectively). I don't think that's any better or worse than a game like Nine Sols where the final boss took me hundreds of tries though; just a different flavor. The world-building isn't as rich as the more epic metroidvanias like Hollow Knight or Lone Fungus (or again, Nine Sols) but again I'm fine with that. It's just a more casual game that has really excellent level design & exploration poetics.

Been playing Transiruby and the exploration poetics are top-notch, like rivalling Super Metroid good, which is a distinct rarity among metroidvanias.
Something the original Super Metroid had was required secrets and the expectation that you'd actually read the map as a gameplay skill. Many many metroidvanias don't have that, including favorites like Ori, but it's one of the things that makes Hollow Knight stand out. Transiruby sadly doesn't have maps-as-rewards, but it does have moments where consulting the map is expected (water cog is a big one since it's in the middle of an already-explored area by the time you can access it). The game also requires revisits with the coin door mechanic, but marks the things you need on the map and structures revisits really nicely with a variety of shortcuts that open up as you gain abilities.
I was kinda sad when the first movement power was double jump (le sigh) but the second movement power is really neat and original, so I'm happy again.
Besides the big things, there are a lot of little moments where there's ludonarrative harmony between the choice structures and the area themes/plot points.
Haven't finished it yet, but so far it's headed into my top tier of metroidvanias, or very close, even despite fairly simple combat and easy (if fun) bosses.

I've always loved this song (and the album too... well except for one or two cuts)

Finished the original 1996 #SakuraWars. I now understand why it garnered such a following.
The cast is super fun, it's richly illustrated and beautifully animated. I didn't particularly care for the story direction in the final two chapters or the battle system at all.
There's *a lot* to miss in the game, though, so from chapter 4 onwards I played with a walkthrough on my lap. Final playtime was 19 hours!

Finished the 2019 #SakuraWars. Beautiful to look at and a fun cast, but it never really grabbed me. When the pacing picks up, it goes too fast and never really explores the consequences of what happens. I'd played the demo before, so my expectations for the combat segments was already low.

Last night I finished #Yakuza5 after 49 hours. I thought this was a really good entry in the series and a vast improvement over its predecessor. It was a tad long, but I enjoyed it throughout.

When I stop getting distracted by fun mini-games and actually finish #Yakuza5, I'm going to give another SEGA series a spin: #SakuraWars. First the reboot, then the originals.

I also finished #Terranigma and #Halo 2. Great games. Terranigma had been on my shelf for ages, so I'm glad I finally got around playing it. Outside the Bloody Mary fight, I had a great time playing it.

Finished Kai no Kiseki. I thought it was a good entry in the series that really pushes the series forward. I didn't care as much for the gameplay as I did for the story, and the story certainly did deliver. Took me 72 hours to finish.

For the first time in ages I played, and actually finished, a racing game. I played #GranTurismo6. Limiting myself to Japanese car manufacturers, I stormed through most of the career mode in a heavily tuned, white Nissan GT-R Black Edition.
The last Gran Turismo I played was 3, which was considerably longer and more challenging in my memory...

Decided to hook it up and continue where I left off. That was #FinalFantasyXIII early 2023, so now I'm going through its sequel. It's been surprisingly fun, even before it introduced Moogle yeeting.

Reached the third stratum in #EtrianOdyssey5! The second didn't give me much trouble and I could save up skill points until thbe boss, where I could "stop holding back." Now I'm gonna put the game away for a bit and play something else for the time being.

Tried out #Sagrada and enjoyed it a lot. Deceptively simple dice placing and pattern making with a fun theme.

Started a new #EtrianOdyssey5 file and just made it to the second stratum. My guild consists of a Masurao, Pugilist and Dragoon backed by a Necromancer and Botanist.

Still playing #Shiren5, still haven't managed to clear any of the post-game dungeons. This was my best attempt thus far: 41 floors into a 45 floor dungeon.

Last night I finished #VagrantStory, an absolute masterpiece. It asks a lot of its players in the beginning, but it gives so much in return.
A cast of flawed and very human characters. An engaging story well paced, written and presented. A stellar combination of cinematic and art direction, pushing the PlayStation One to its limits. I love it.
Vagrant Story cemented itself as one of my all-time favourite games.

My current video game obsession is The Roottrees Are Dead, a fun little indie puzzle game heavily inspired by #ReturnOfTheObraDinn
Highly recommend for my fellow research and genealogy nerds, as well as true crime fans who prefer lower stakes and less gendered/sexualized dynamics. It's completely free on itch.io, but I'll be throwing a donation the creator's way because I've been enjoying it so much.
