Proposal: hold the separation referendum now.

If it passes with a clear majority, they can leave Confederation (it won't happen).

If it fails, everyone who voted to leave Canada has to ... leave Canada.

    *Everyone* ends up happier.

  2. The 365-day year has been subdivided a number of ways over time; the current 12 months of not-quite-uniform length with exceptions every 4 and every 100 years is undoubtedly messy. The French revolutionary calendar had 12 30-day months plus a 5 (or presumably 6) day "intercalary" period, but even that feels suboptimal.

Clearly the correct solution is five 73-day months. At least then the only variance is the leap year.

  4. It seems to me to be a no-brainer but should Canada not have an election requirement that any candidate must qualify for a security clearance before being able to sworn in to Parliament? Hell, I had to have a clear criminal record check in order to drive a school bus, surely the making of laws should require at least that. Going further, why would anyone 𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓿𝓲𝓬𝓽𝓮𝓭 of an indictable offence under the Criminal Code of Canada be allowed to formulate laws of Canada?

With the numbers of people running it would be onerous for
Elections administrators in the designated area to conduct either criminal record checks or a security clearance. However, parties would be careful to make sure if failure to pass resulted in the disqualification of their candidate and the election of the next with most votes.

  5. A modest proposal about popes...

So, another pope has died and his ashes will soon be emitted from the chimney on the Sistine Chapel. It is time to select a new pope.

But the pope has presided over a seemingly endless series of scandals for generations. They keep electing new popes, but the problems never go away. Why can't they solve these problems?

Looking for commonalities among all the popes of the last century or so, one stood out to me: they're all Catholic!

Maybe they should try choosing a nice Unitarian, or perhaps a Wiccan? They'd have at least as good a chance of solving the problems as the last umpteen Catholic popes. Maybe even better.

    It's worth a shot.

  6. array subsetting syntax: A Modest Proposal

    x[, 1] always retains dimensions
    x[[ ,1]] reduces dimensionality by 1
    x[[[ ,1]]] returns a vector

  8. @TechConnectify Since everyone is using internet connected timekeepers constantly (even if they have analogue ones) and most of these get NTP updates, we could probably fiddle around with the clocks even more often for QOL reasons. Go all in on it 😆 #amodestproposal
