It was nice to get name-checked in this Cincinnati Magazine piece about the book I wrote for the American Sign Museum:
The photo shows the book in-situ on the Museum's flagship 'Main Street' installation, which frames original historic signs in/on storefronts constructed and decorated to reflect different eras of America's commercial past.

"Rock City in Chattanooga, TN, was founded by Garnet and Frieda Carter in 1932, and established itself as a popular botanical and geological tourist destination. Visitors came to see Frieda’s beautiful gardens and the views (of seven states on a clear day) from the top of the mountain nearby."

@DanMorgan The American Sign Museum has what is believed to be the last authentic 'Great Sign' in existence. It's displayed at the entrance and, once you step inside, there's also a scale replica that was used for things like trade shows and also the original blueprints for its design.

At work on it is Christine Brunk DeShazo, who led the production of the original design by Noel B. Weber.

Today I'm learning about opal (or milk) glass signs, and this short video is a neat explanation of how they were made, including the process of shaping the original letterforms in clay.

The technique was pioneered by what is now the Flexlume Sign Company, and there are a number of their original opal glass signs at the American Sign Museum.

These are fun: point-of-purchase (POP) signs with rotating elements to create a variety of eye-catching effects.
Today was my last day at the American Sign Museum, and even with a whole week there, I've only scratched the surface of this incredible place.
It's felt like a pilgrimage, and I have so much processing to do. Thank you to Tod, Ioanna, Erin, Jesse, Natalie, Kathy, and everyone else that made this a trip that will live long in the memory.

I've also been doing a few bits for BLAG 07 (https://bl.ag/07) while I'm here, including a piece on Mike Stevens (RIP).
His book, Mastering Layout, remains a staple for sign painters, and the American Sign Museum now has all of the original cards he produced for the publication.
This is one of my favourites, with its black and white chrome effect, and 'second oldest profession' line.
