almost lost memories of a 1950s/60s childhood playing “cowboys & itchybums” (what advanced senses of humour we had when we were young). the world was as black and white as a TV show — death was never painful but instantaneous and there were no bigger issues/ context than how wrong indians were to try and hold back the good white people developing america during the western era
(shows about world war two were much the same, and just as formulaic - there were us, and there were germans, with only the technology of death advanced)

fast forward to more adult narratives — the usa as a land of freedom and opportunity, where good people thrive and those who don’t, well, it’s their fault… the rosy history one would imagine reading FreeToChoose - Milton & Rose Friedman’s essay on the benefits of free market capitalism and a willingness to work hard at the pursuit of happiness

#1883 (on paramount) was a refreshingly complex take on the westward expansion of the US after the civil war

then came #AmericanPrimeval on netflix - a four way clash between mormons, the US army, Indigenous people, and settlers. it’s loosely based in some historical truth, and nothing like milton friedman’s rosy take - just violence, greed, othering and in-human indifference. the show didn’t “teach me” all about the mormons, but as i never watch tv without an ipad handy and the internet at my fingertips, one can’t help but discover stuff.

#HellOnWheels is on 7+ in australia (i bought it through itunes cos i like to pretend i’m elon). this is also set in the USA after the civil war, and by golly I liked it. sure, the usual murder, rape, racism sexism racism rape sexism limited opportunities and murder etc but far less cow-plop than what we are supposed to believe about capitalism sprouting up where opportunities are unregulated by government.

the story line is loosely based on the race to complete a trans-continental railway. there are also mormons, US Army, Indigenous people, immigrants, and formerly enslaved, with several different worldviews represented.

two characters i came to like - the central character is cullen bohannen, with an interesting set of values, and Eva, who had buckets of gumption. i could smell the mud while I watched (yecch) but a lot of the soundtrack music is 👍🏻
