The world constantly looks at the United States and asks one question: "How did they get so dumb?" But the truth is much darker. Americans aren't naturally stupid - their system was meticulously engineered over 200 years to destroy critical thinking
Today, we’re looking at the "engineered ignorance" of the American public

@CdnCurmudgeon A great takedown of what's wrong with American society, with some historical context. I'm also appalled that it's considered mandatory to say "Thank you for your service" to anyone in uniform there, along with many other loyalty tests. Thanks for digging this up.
America's Philosophical Void: A Costly Misconception

Many Americans think philosophy is about faith, not thinking. This is different from how other countries see it, leading to weaker public arguments.

Because nothing says #ethics and #integrity better than unpaid #research ...
In what way does pressuring freelance lecturers on teaching-only contracts to provide unpaid research for accreditation metrics, reflect the principle of Ethics and Integrity that John Cabot University claims to uphold?

I used to think 'Gone with the Wind' was wonderfully romantic...and then I served as Adjunct Faculty at an American university.
The details of my experience at John Cabot University in Rome are now in the public domain: tinyurl.com/ruat-caelum
@soatok I didn't know you when you published that one, but it's most excellent. I don't understand why it's on the bottom of your views.
The benevolence/kindness part against evil is a kind of super power. Bad people just don't get it to a point... And they don't get it even more why people will side with you for that.
(Then, I wanted to express something about feeling out of place in the world, and my brain was weaving threads between that post, your "doesn't matter" one, the recent most excellent post by @grimalkina https://social.treehouse.systems/@grim[email protected]/114350502204401207 or in French when @uichelorraine describes her family or point out the common malovelence around her, or when @dysfun expressed lack of understanding when I explained how I try to manage my company and the values I try to put in that, or @RuthMalan all encompassing empathy, but it goes nowhere so the unknotting will be left as an exercise for the readers.
Perhaps it's just: you're all very good, kind, uncommon people, and life is complicated and I hope you will find ways to make it works for you)

"These follow Trump's executive orders related to education in January. One focused on expanding school voucher programs, partly by redirecting federal funds from public to private schools, while the other prioritized "patriotic education" in public classrooms to eliminate curriculum that doesn't align with the president's politics."
...forced illiteracy for the already marginalized is next...
welcome the official death of #americaneducation
@Nonilex Fuck him. It is not a child's job to make a better man out of an asshole. Or a better person out of a parent, period.
You want better men, JD Vance? First, BECOME ONE. Second, invest money in education & community. This is the burden of YOUR lack of responsibility and empathy. Stop dumping it on the backs of women and children.

I am a #SpecialEducation #teacher in the US. Every day, I have to deal with the reality that my students might be injured or killed Instead of #GunControl to solve the American problem of #SchoolShooting, we are going to arm our teachers &expect them to potentially shoot their own students. The hold that the #NRA has on this country's leadership and the moral failure of the #Church to carry out its mission is obscene.

This is what it is like to teach in so many places in the United States.Grinding poverty, the lack of social services & public investment, and indifference of those in power to the marginalized, as well asthe lie of the "American Dream" are a toxic combination. We end up spending out of pocket just so a kid can have some gloves or a snack.Meanwhile you have #GOP governors turning down FOOD FOR CHILDREN!

Why are there not metal detectors & highly trained armed guards at every door of every school in America?
Do we want to? No. Do we have to? Apparently we do.
Don't tell me we can't afford it.

When we speak of #innumeracy in #AmericanEducation, we often speak of the inability of citizens to read a graph. It's math illiteracy.
As a retired math educator, I'm calling the #USHeathcareSystem expense v outcome debacle as an example of citizen innumeracy.
I'm glad to report that it is generational, and that younger folk can read this graph.
