I'm a 3rd gen #AmericanBornChinese (#ABC).
Grew up hearing #Cantonese, which is my native #ChineseLanguage, spoken all around me when I was growing up but I was never required to speak Cantonese with others.
So, while I can speak a few words & phrases, I cannot carry on a conversation in Cantonese.
I've dabbled with learning how to speak Cantonese well enough to carry on a normal conversation for some time using books & tapes, which always resulted in failure. in the past.🤷♂️
I'm at it again, this time using #GoogleTranslate to help me in the process, which I'm using to learn new words & how words should be pronounced & structured to carry on a conversation.
Hoping to keep at to to gradually build up some fluency that I can practice w/my ABC GF, who knows how to speak a bit more Cantonese than I do.

Started watching #AmericanBornChinese because it had Michelle Yeoh; it turned out to be pretty good in other ways too. A nice, cozy ancient mythology/modern high school life blend with fun over-the-top action every now and then.

I recently saw Disney's #AmericanBornChinese & Netflix's #TheBrothersSun. Let me just say --
OMG. The #ChineseAmerican representation is AMAZING!! Seeing familiar cross-cultural parent-child dynamics, characters speaking #Mandarin & eating tomatoes stir-fried with scrambled eggs, all in mainstream pop culture entertainment?!
Teenage me never even imagined how validating & comforting seeing pieces of myself on TV could be. So glad kids today are growing up with it.

We got Disney+ for #DoctorWho but I’m so glad others on the fediverse were talking up #AmericanBornChinese. Based on those posts, when we saw the listing we took the chance and decided to watch. It was just an excellent story!

One of the things I’m loving about #AmericanBornChinese is, despite a brief familiarity with the legend of Sun Wukong’s journey, I have no idea where this story is going. We’re 6 episodes in and I thought I figured out the necklace — finally an obvious trope! Only it wasn’t and I was wrong. Sandy’s gender-swapped? Mind blown 🤯 And the sitcom side story still has me completely perplexed! So many surprises to the writing and I’m delighted by every one

We finished watching 'American Born Chinese' on Disney+ tonight and it was a very delightful show. I was impressed with how many various stories they wove together, but you still felt satisfied with all of them and the characters. It was heartfelt and funny and had some really good action sequences. I hope they bring it back for a second season. I feel I should check out the comic now.

I really enjoyed #AmericanBornChinese. I’m a fan of the #stories of the #JourneyToTheWest, and really enjoyed this, in spite of the fact that I approached the #miniseries with appreciation

With the success of the #DisneyPlus series #AmericanBornChinese, the streamer will share some episodes with other outlets. Episode 1 will be available on #YouTube through Sunday, July 23. #ABC will broadcast Episode 1 on Saturday, June 24 at 8PM. #Hulu will stream Episodes 1-3 from Monday, June 26 - Sunday, July 9, and #Roku will stream 1-3 from Monday, June 26 - Monday, July 10. American Born Chinese: graphic novel is phenomenal, show is not. I try to evaluate adaptations on their own merits rather than compare to the source, but dude, these changes are not good. Purely to make the show easier to sell, taking away from the cleverness and impact of the story.

So many of us were hooked on Monkey and we ended up absorbing new myths, new stories.
Singing along to Monkey Magic, who knew we were getting hooked on a 16th-century novel about the retrieval of sutras from India??
Makes me quite nostalgic to be watching #AmericanBornChinese and see Monkey and Pigsy again.

刚看了第一集，玄幻部分的设定是有点雷的（大概和#母语羞涩 也有关？毕竟#西游记 故事对于中华出身的人太熟悉了……），但日常的部分其实还行，一上来就讨论了#ABC 面临的微妙种族环境和#BeGoodAsian 这种所谓低头隐忍的策略是有问题的
另外孙悟空是#吴彦祖 出演，演他儿子的小演员眉清目秀，属于搁在国内长辈都会夸长得俊的那种。这剧豆瓣一开分就非常低，但从第一集来看是值得看一看的。后面不好看的话我会回来编辑这一条……
……第四集是真的天雷滚滚……差不多是《#天空之城》里穿越包裹着laputa那层云的密集程度……虽然能明白编剧想故意做出古早低成本奇幻剧的味道，但因为和汉语地区观众固有认知偏差太大了，着实难顶（
看完了，不是很行……虽然偶尔有些亮点，比如「观音攒调料包」以及围绕剧中剧展开的少数族裔在影视行业生存空间的讨论等等，但整体上还是太粗糙了，即使考虑这是个儿童片也很难达到及格线。
