I never thought I would ever learn even a few words of sign language. One of the songs for the Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus Holiday Concert this weekend is Stille Nacht (Silent Night) with the American Sign Language displayed by all performers while singing. It is really beautiful.

True Biz ist wirklich ein ausgezeichnetes Buch über Gehörlosigkeit, (Amerikanische) Gebärdensprache, erwachsen werden und Zwischenmenschliches. Auch das Buchlayout tut viel interessantes, um rüberzubringen, um einen in eine Perspektive zu versetzen, in der Gebärdetes leichter zu verfolgen ist als Gehörtes. Halusin nähdä kuinka ihmiset tulkitsevat tai tietävät ennestään kyseisen käsimerkin tarkoituksen. Äänestystuloksen perusteella 14% äänestäjistä tiesi käsimerkin alkuperäisen merkityksen.Kyseessä on hyvin vanha käsimerkki. Merkin tarkoitus on ilmaista "I love you" tai "love you". Sanojen ensimmäiset alkukirjaimet sormitetaan samanaikaisesti sormiaakkosina eli I, L ja Y.
Käsimerkin historia on pitkä, se ulottuu 1900-luvun tienoolle ja on tullut alkujaan amerikkalaisesta viittomakielestä. Kyseinen käsimerkki on levinnyt viime vuosikymmeninä sosiaalisen median kautta laajasti yleiseen käyttöön ympäri maailmaa. Tätä käytetään myös täällä meillä Suomessakin viittomakielisten kesken.

Why are so many young people from the USA choosing courses on American Sign Language at school and college?
Three guesses as to motive:
- A thoroughly laudable desire to learn something of benefit to the wider community.
- A less laudable but understandable hope that ASL will be easier than Spanish, French, or other foreign languages.
- Worryingly, an unspoken but powerful drive to evade confrontation with cultures and histories that differ from those of the USA.
I might be wrong on all three counts, of course!
