Im Jahr 1879 wurde auf der Insel Maui ein kleiner, eher klobiger, gelbgrüner hawaiianischer Honigkriecher mit einem dünnen, kurzen Schnabel gesammelt, aber die Art wurde erst 1893 formell beschrieben. Frühe Naturforscher bezeichneten diesen Vogel, der heute als Maui ʻAlauahio bekannt ist, aufgrund seiner Art der Nahrungssuche als „Kriecher“.
