  1. Being an adult means I can have wine whenever I want, like at noon on Monday, so that's exactly what I did :)

Beautiful orange Gewurztraminer (with a little bit of Auxerrois and Pinot Gris). Only 4 days of skin contact, but look at this color! Perfect for still uncomfortably hot day off - another win for Alsace in my book!

Edit: left a bit of it for today, and it was still lovely!

  3. Tonight I'm having another orange wine: 2022 Papari Valley Chinuri-Rkatsiteli by 3 Qvevri Terraces.

Orange, hint of mushrooms and smoke, on the palate surprisingly tannic, but pleasant with notes of peach, orange peel and tea. Sadly, among the orange wines I've tried recently it's not particularly remarkable, but it doesn't mean it's bad at all - quite nice on a hot summer evening!

  4. Tonight's dinner bottle came here all the way from Morava in Czechia - it's a 2021 Veltlin Orange by Vinařství Kacetl, a 100% Grüner Veltliner (grooves for short ;))

On the nose it gives sour orange and lemon, with a hint of moss and a tiny bit of yeast. Palate is refreshing, but less citrusy than the nose would suggest, with nice tannic structure and a taste of soup stock that balances the acidity quite well. Quite nice!

  5. Today's bottle with dinner is 2022 Ex Alba by Podere Pradarolo - a long maceration 100% Trebbiano orange wine.

Nose of orange peel with a bit of pear and a hibt of yeast, palate is very well balanced, with bright refreshi g acidity and flavors of orange, pear, stone fruit, a hint of grass and some minerality.

Very, very tasty, absolutely lovely on a warm summer evening.

  6. Today, with dinner: 2022 Pierre Frick Pinot Gris Maceration.

A wonderful, deep amber color, with nose of citrus and orange, with a slight hint of that typical Alsace petrol.

Palate is a big surprise: orange wines can be harsh, but this one is silky smooth and surprisingly well integrated. Again orange, a bit of ink, hint of minerality. Wonderful!

  7. These start to feel like shouting into a void, but here's a spectacular Gewurztraminer, Pinot gris and Pinot Noir (among others) orange wine from Alsace (it's more amber and less pink irl): Les Vins Pirouettes Qvevri de Stéphane 2020. Hand-picked and aged in Georgian amphoras under ground.

Amazingly warm, cozy and delicious flavors - definitely a recent favorite!

  12. Another wonderful orange from Georgia: Jakeli
Rkatsiteli - Kisi 2022. Nose has hints of rosemary and citrus, palate gives apricots and hints of caramel with surprisingly grippy tannins. Nice long finish too - delicious!

  13. Got an interesting one today: Podere Pradarolo Vej Bianco Antico 2022 - a beautiful Malvasia orange with 240 days of skin contact.

Fascinating nose, with notes of yeast and hops - almost like a beer! Palate gives orange, lychee, maybe even a bit of tea? Nice long finish too - delicious!

  15. Today, with dinner - 2021 Matiashvili Amber. Heard of big bold reds? This one is a big bold orange ;) Gorgeous color, 16.2 ABV (!) and drinks almost like a red too - delicious.

Shown here in my favorite orange wine glass made by Rona - machine-made, but feels almost handmade.

  17. 8000-year-old wines! Made a clip of all the Georgian wines I tasted in China this past year, most of them from the amber / orange / skin-contact category.

And including producers such as Askaneli Brothers, Anapea Village, Baia, Barbale and Casreli.

In a country with such a long alcohol history--the oldest known site in China dates to about 9000 years ago and involved blending rice, honey and fruit--the story of Georgia resounds. And it is fun to see so many wineries experimenting with amphora / skin-contact wine here.

All of the wines in this video are available from importer Georgia Selections. Also see the website winesgeorgia.com for more info about Georgia's wine scene.

  19. More skin-contact white wines made in China, this time by Canaan winery just outside of Beijing.

    - The Riesling has 1 month of skin contact in amphora, then 6 months of aging in old oak.

    - The white blend, with Muscat, Chenin Blanc, Ehrenfelser, Müller-Thurgau and more, has 6 weeks of skin contact in stainless steel.

Both wines are fresh and floral, with that Riesling having ample lemon-y character, while the white blend's aromas dance all over the place: chrysanthemum, passion fruit, jasmine, citrus peel and more.

Anyway, I brought back one bottle of each to include in my next tasting in Beijing. Looking forward to sharing them!

  27. I love quirky tastings.

And simply featuring Georgian amber wines was quirky enough for many guests at a tasting in Beijing.

But then one brought an amber wine from Poland. And we had another from China’s Ningxia region. Plus, local wines made with Georgian grapes Saperavi and Rkatsiteli. And more.

We tried them at the new Peach restaurant, with Georgian wines from importer Larry Zheng.

They were a real eye -- and taste bud -- opener for amber wine novices. And it was fun to see their versatility in pairings with dishes with Mexican, Middle Eastern and Italian themes.

The story appeals, too: the idea of drinking wine familiar to people who existed before written history, as far back as 8000 years ago.

More details on the tasting here, with wines from Georgia (Casreli, Anapea Village
& Baia), Poland (Domaine Bliskowice) and China (Domaine Charme, Puchang & Grace Vineyard).

  30. ‘Orange’ wine from China. Made by Longting winery, in coastal Shandong province, using Petit Manseng grapes, wild yeast and oak barrel aging.

The label says "delicate, dense and ethereal. It is like being in the singing of birds and flowers, and the joy of living things."

    Sounds like spiritual experience!

I’ve been hosting Georgian wine tastings – all amber wines – of late, so I’ll save this bottle for the next one. Always like to have a few local wines, either skin-contact or made using Georgian grapes like Saperavi or Rkatsiteli.

Anyway, this wine is more evidence of how China's wine scene is steadily diversifying. While a Cabernet / Bordeaux blend mentality is still dominant, we see an ever-growing number of grape varieties used for commercial wines and more of those wines leaning to niches such as skin contact, natural and biodynamic.
