Had really been craving an Animal Crossing-like game lately and gave Amber Isle a go. Not as feature rich as AC, but it was cute and enjoyable and hitting the spot for now.
Unfortunately only learned later that the Switch version was buggy as hell and would slow down or crash the later you got into the game. It's pretty much unplayable now.
Ah well. Was fun while it lasted.

i can't immediately recommend #AmberIsle without mentioning a few caveats:
- the game feels rough around the edges.
- my experience on controller and on steam deck feels subpar.
- performance is weird on deck and on my main rig. i get low fps frequently. feels like there should be better graphics settings and maybe some optimizing in the overworld area.
- the tutorial doesn't really introduce you to your different types of inventory. i couldn't find an item a character asked me for and i had to fail a quest. :( didn't impact anything but it made me feel sad
- i got soft-locked during a cutscene and had to restart the game. thankfully, i was able to progress.
however, i LOVE the gameplay loop of this game. it is like a mixture of animal crossing and harvest moon with dinosaurs. it is lovely to look at and i hope it gets more polish soon. like 7/10 for now but absolutely a 9/10 if they fix all the bugs.

Upcoming game #AmberIsle will be heavily localised. Not entirely sure what this means, but I get the impression the island's inhabitants will speak in the language, dialect, and accent of the player's country... But what about this "themes" thing? So, they'll care about issues that people in your country commonly care about? 🤔

Been working on finalizing the visuals for Amber Isle, and worked out a neat technique for getting cartoony, stylized twinkling stars for the skybox.
I made a blurred, spaced-out hexagon grid texture, with each hex having a random Red-Green-Blue color. These colors are hue-shifted over time, so they cycle their colors.
These RGB colors are then used as an XYZ direction vector, which is computed against the XYZ of the view direction (via dot product). As each color "direction" gets closer in line to the view direction, the star fades in!
An offset expands the range at which the need to match to show up, so you can control how many stars are in the sky at once.
Honestly pretty proud of this one!
