  4. Just realized - we used to spend a significant amount of money each month with #amazon and it was easy to justify because of #AmazonSmile. With that gone our purchases through Amazon have dropped to about 1/10th of what they were. That little perk held so much justification for not finding alternatives.

  5. Amazon has announced that it is discontinuing its #AmazonSmile program, which allows a portion of every purchase to go to charity. The inability to #Smile comes as no shock to #Amazon employees.

  6. I guess now #AmazonSmile is going away I can finally turn off push notifications and the regular “we thought you’d like …”

If they offered me a new #RaspberryPi sensor each time I’d be down for but they seem oddly interested in supplying me mundane household stuff (a symptom of my mundane purchase history probs)

  7. It's sad to learn that #AmazonSmile is stopping donating to charities. It's even more depressing to learn that the program was never designed to be as generous as it was presented, but to fuck over Google and have to pay that company less in referral fees.

  10. Since Amazon announced the end of the program, I've been turning to eBay for some online purchases. It turns out that eBay can be quite good for used books!

For purposes of detaching more from Amazon, I'm wondering what other vendors people like, especially for books and goods.

  14. CW: Long thread/52

This is the hidden dynamic behind the rise and fall of #AmazonSmile, the program whereby Amazon gave a small amount of money to charities of your choice when you shopped there, but only if you used Amazon's own search tool to locate the products you purchased. This provided an incentive for Amazon customers to use its own increasingly enshittified search, which it could cram full of products from sellers who coughed up payola, as well as its own lookalike products.

  15. Learning that #Amazon probably created #AmazonSmile for traffic optimization, not altruism is typical corporate greed and sad. It was a pittance of income overall, but still helped so many.

  16. @AvvieLanche read this, on how and why the #AmazonSmile program was created (spoiler: definitely not for altruistic reasons!):

  17. #AmazonSmile has a few problems. Their drivers leave pallets of packages outside of post offices unattended. They block entrances to keep mail carriers, (myself) from entering. They say that they’re reducing their cardboard consumption. Cardboard boxes are being left for garbage at PO. Please repost this to get attention.

  18. discontinues charity donation program amid cost cuts.
This sucks. The nice thing about using was the lack of bombardment from the chosen charities (generated by direct giving.)

  19. This is why it's impossible to rely on #charity and a very good example of why proper redistribution of wealth from the rich to help those in need is necessary.

  20. Absolute rubbish news! AmazonSmile is finishing in February. That will be about 30-50% of our yearly income lost! I wish these big companies would consider the impact their decisions have on small charities.
