¿Sabías que el hogar de Wonder Woman no nació en los cómics sino en la geografía real de la antigüedad?

La mítica Temiscira de las viñetas se basa directamente en una ciudad costera real que existió junto al mar Negro, en lo que hoy es la provincia de Samsun en Turquía. En los textos griegos clásicos se documenta que este asentamiento costero era la capital oficial del reino de las amazonas, situado específicamente en la desembocadura del río Termodonte. El nombre proviene del griego antiguo Themiskyra, un término ligado a la noción de la justicia de la deidad Temis combinado con la palabra que designa a una llanura o territorio fortificado. Los registros históricos confirman que la urbe real dejó de figurar en los mapas tras ser sitiada y destruida por el general romano Lúculo durante el transcurso de las guerras mitridáticas en el siglo I a. C. Muchísimo tiempo después, la editorial de cómics rescató este trasfondo histórico para renombrar a la Isla Paraíso original, transformando una llanura de Asia Menor en el famoso archipiélago oculto que todos conocen como el lugar natal de Diana Prince la princesa de Temiscira, conocida internacionalmente como Wonder Woman.
