Story Pile: The Amazing Digital Circus
There are times the internet falls in love with something and I am blessed to find that I am one of the people able to just watch and enjoy it. Rather than get involved in lengthy bickerfests on one of the many worst places on the internet (Twitter, Reddit, to an extent Tumblr), I am somehow capable of merely enjoying myself and the work.
Built different I guess.
This is about The Amazing Digital Circus.
Due to the fact that The Amazing Digital Circus has a highly-engaged fandom, and is itself a type of media that I think benefits from being given a lot of close attention, I want to provide an opportunity for anyone who isn’t interested, or who wants to avoid anyone else’s analysis, to get the hell out before I start talking it.
Consider this a full spoiler warning lockdown. After this point I’m going to start talking about everything in the series with gleeful abandon, without concern if I’m giving up information or not. This is an analysis of my experience of watching The Amazing Digital Circus, and absolutely not a first-impressions advertisement or review that’s meant to encourage you to check it out.
If you do want one of those: I think you should check it out! It’s quite good, and it’s thoughtful and clever and interesting in ways that a lot of other shows with this kind of offputting online presence can wind up overstated. Due disclosure, I am biased here because Glitch is an Australian company and I would like it if more Australian media production was respected and recognised for its qualities.

I can’t believe Jax actually abstracted like that, so quickly…He was such a big focus of the series. and then poof, gone, not a part of the end. I’m not against killing off characters or anything, I just… don’t get this one.
Like, narratively, what am I supposed to take from this? That someone avoidant and self-destructive is doomed, they can’t be redeemed? It was for nothing, whatever?
I could understand if they went something like: Even if he was doomed the whole time, the kindness shown to him was worthwhile; or, someone can’t be saved if they don’t want to save themself. The latter was implied, but not really leaned into in any satisfying or emotionally resonant way, just… implied. Pomni didn’t really even get any payoff or come-uppance for her “I can fix him” savior schtick…
Art is best when you learn something intangible about being human, and TADC had all of the elements to do that. It’s a literal “circus,” the perfect analog to being human and being with others in this big wide world! But… I don’t get the feeling they landed it.
Still, I liked it! Good episode, good ending! Not perfect, not masterful, not as good as it could’ve been… but good enough! The Jax psyche flashback parts really were phenominal, too (even if, again, there wasn’t payoff)!

I went to see The Amazing Digital Circus: Last Act with my kid yesterday.
I just realised that the annoying AI Caine in the story is every rich techbro asshole on the planet, trapping us in their concoctions, confused why we go crazy inside them, wondering why we hate them for it, and losing their shit because ”we’re ungreatful for all the things they’ve done for us”. 😅

I just got back from the movies after watching the The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act :ablobcorgi_bongo: It was extremely good. I also forgot how fun it is to go see a movie with a bunch of fans when they're, y'know, actually being respectful. :blobfoxheartcute:

I'm really hyped for Thursday, we're going to the local cinema to see the last episode of Amazing Digital Circus.
And I'm also wondering how many kids will be there despite content warnings, because the posters are cute and shiny and nobody expects psychological horror inspired by famous Harlan Ellison's "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream".

Jax in #amazingdigitalcircus is a terrible awful Chaotic Evil aligned character who is also the nicest bean underneath.
And as a result I want to hang out with him just to do so.
I cannot fix him. But I think he would be fun to play Factorio with.
