Полтора месяца зависаний, ноль дампов и 44 байта нулей
Полтора месяца моя рабочая машина умирала. Не BSOD, не перезагрузка — именно умирала: экран чёрный, вентиляторы на видеокарте выходят на сто процентов и так и остаются. Никакой реакции ни на что. Только кнопка Reset. Сначала раз в неделю. Потом два. К середине июля — три раза за сутки. Но хуже самих зависаний было другое: после них не оставалось ничего. Ни дампа, ни минидампа, ни BSOD, ни единой записи WHEA. В журнале — Event 41, Kernel-Power, «система была перезагружена, завершив работу некорректно», BugcheckCode = 0 . Windows даже не успевала понять, что умерла. Отлаживать нечего. Есть только труп и никаких улик. Забегая вперёд: виновата оказалась не память, не драйвер и не блок питания, хотя я последовательно подозревал всех трёх. Виноват был PCIe Gen5. Лечится одним пунктом в BIOS. Полтора месяца.

Having done several UEFI Firmware updates today on a number of X870E based AM5 motherboards, it's clear that it works. No disasters. 🙂🤷♂️
What is odd though is that some board manufacturers do retain the firmware settings after an version update and other just don't. Setting up UEFI when everything is reset to defaults is a pain 🙄
Even when you have the option to save the current settings to USB storage, you can't always reload them on a newer version of the firmware.

Конец дешёвых ПК и мировой кризис. Придётся экономить
Подорожание комплектующих изменило рынок. Тут происходит много странных на первый взгляд явлений: выходят ноутбуки с процессорами от телефонов (!?), появляются материнки на старой платформе AM4 (потому что память DDR4 намного дешевле DDR5), появились даже дисплеи для ноутбуков с частотой 1 Гц (это инновация для энергосбережения). Но есть и плюсы. Купленные в прошлые годы ПК останутся актуальными дольше обычного. Старые ПК получат новую жизнь. Разработчикам игр и ПО придётся умерить аппетиты — и оптимизировать софт для текущего железа, а не в расчёте на апгрейд. Потому что апгрейда не будет. Разработчикам придётся отложить генераторы нейрослопа кода — и сосредоточиться на вдумчивой оптимизации софта. А пользователям — экономить и выкручиваться.

Saw an article comparing the #AMD "#AM4 Platform" lasting 9 years and counting to "#PowerPC" lasting 12, and I got the impression this person didn't realize that the comparison they are comparing a #CPUSocket to a #CPUArchitecture, because as fas as I know, you couldn't upgrade an early #PPC #CPU to a much newer one without getting a new motherboard...
That aside, it is impressive how the #ZenArchitecture, after a decade of weird short-term stuff like the Bulldozer, managed to become such a long lasting standard. It's like they tried out so many weird methods trying to make chips that ran better, only to come up with this relatively simple way of building things.
And honestly, I don't think Zen is that different from Intel architectures, once you get past the compiler flags. As long as it all runs the same code at the end of the day, it doesn't matter...
...but the lifespan of those Sockets, AM4 and now #AM5, that's a consumer value that I don't think is matched right now.

Still looking into building a #computer in the next few months, though I'm waiting for situations to change a little before I commit to anything.
Looking at various #motherboard options, specifically those with a 120 Watt #AMD #AM5 #CPU Socket so I have a good upgrade path. Right now I've gotten it down to a few, but I notice that some of these have multiple #M.2 #SSD slots, and while I do plan to have one of them, I would like the option to have an #HDD, due to the cost-to-storage ratio.
So I'm wondering, is there a way to put a #SATA drive in an #M2 slot? I'm sure someone has made some sort of adapter...

MINISFORUM MS-A1 mini PC is now available with a Ryzen 9 9950X processor
The MINISFORUM MS-A1 is a compact desktop computer that measures 189.5 x 186 x 48mm (7.46″ x 7.32″ x 1.89″), features a robust set of ports that includes USB4, OCuLink, and dual 2.5 Gb Ethernet connectors.
Unlike most smaller mini PCs, the MS-A1 also has an AMD A5 socket that allows you to bring your own processor or upgrade to a more powerful CPU in the future. But if that feels like too much trouble, you can also buy a system that comes with a CPU pre-installed. When the MS-A1 first launched earlier this year it was available either as a barebones computer or with an AMD Ryzen 7 8700G chip. Now the company is selling a version with a higher-performance Ryzen 9 9950X processor.
Both chips are desktop processors that are compatible with motherboards that support AMD’s AM5 chipset. But the Ryzen 7 8700G is a lower-power processor with decent integrated graphics, while the Ryzen 9 9950HX is a higher-performance chip with far more processing power, but less impressive graphics since it’s often paired with a discrete GPU.

2.2 GHzThe MS-A1 is available as a barebones computer (without any memory, storage, or processor) for $259, or you can pay $919 or more for a model with a Ryzen 9 9950X processor. Theoretically it might be cheaper to purchase a barebones model and then buy that processor separately – it currently sells for around $599 or less. But there’s something to be said for the convenience of not having to install the processor yourself.
As for graphics, the integrated GPU is good enough to handle video playback and some hardware-accelerated graphics for web browsing and other apps. But if you want to do any gaming or graphics work, you’ll probably want a discrete GPU.
hile there’s no room inside the MS-A1 chassis for a discrete GPU, you can connect an external graphics dock thanks to the computer’s 64 Gbps OcuLink connector. Theoretically you could also use the USB4 port… but not with an AMD Ryzen 7000 or Ryzen 9000 series processor.
That’s because while this port functions as a 40 Gbps USB4 port when used with a Ryzen 8000 series processor, it tops out at USB 3.0 speeds when the system is configured with Ryzen 7000 or Ryzen 9000 series processors. The USB Type-C port does support DisplayPort Alt Mode no matter what processor you’re using though, so it can always be used as a video output.
Inside the computer there are four M.2 slots with support for PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs and two SODIMM slots for up to 96GB of total DDR5-5200 memory.
