My attempt at an image description: A view of crater lake looking down from the rim. The surface of the lake is still, and a very deep blue, reflecting the cloudless sky. Some conifers are in the foreground and Wizard Island is seen in the distance. Beyond that the steep slopes on the opposite side of the lake are reflected in the water's still surface.

Occasionally the OP will edit it into the original post (although I saw somewhere such edits might not federate? IDK). There are also reminder bots and the #AltTextForYou hash tag, but indeed, all of these are stopgap measures and the exclusionary spirit of the missing alt text remains.

A real community alt-text tool would be great.
