Importance of hashtags:
Why? Reach, discoverability, growing your community.
How? #Tag_like_this, #TagLikeThis, don’t use spaces or / ´ ‘ - !? etc. Add them to the specific hashtag row. You can also add them to the bottom with one line break below from your post, then it’ll be put below the post automatically.
When? For related things to your post. Such as: your personal tag, platform tags, community tags, sfw/nsfw tags, fandom (series name, abbreviations, characters, ship name, spoilers), art (medium, products used), writing (type of writing, fanfiction, ficlet, imagine, plot summary, article, review, feedback, script) descriptive words, accessibility (screenreader safe, alt text (or #AltText4Me), warnings, political/topic tags, promotional tags (commissions, raffle, for sale, adopt, ad, trial)
Now the long explanation! Aethy doesn’t have full term search as of now (Feb. 2025) so your only bet to finding posts is with hashtags. Most people coming to Mastodon servers are used to finding posts and accounts with terms only. In many platforms spamming hashtags in posts is frowned upon since many crosspost or just use unrelated hashtags to gain more traction. It might seem like a major pain, but I encourage you to try!
You can write commonly used hashtags somewhere and copy-paste them easily. Making it easy is the best way to make it a habit. Aethy has a long mark limit for posts, don’t be afraid of running out quickly. You can add featured hashtags on your profile. Maybe you “do not care”? But there is someone who would love to see your art or writing, and their only bet is to search the hashtag. Trial and error, this isn’t life and death! You can also ask for tag suggestions, why not? Hashtags are also filterable, making tagging more useful. Being able to filter out posts more easily is a bonus for everyone. Absolutely never censor words and terms! Even tags! Please and Thank you!

A few days ago, I was commenting on a few posts from National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) calling out the lack of #AltText on photos they post on their social media accounts. I feel that they must be made aware as they are promoting inclusivity and yet, photos they are posting are not inclusive to blind people reading there post. to those of you who doesn’t know, Facebook lets users add alt text on the images they post on the platform.
Let’s break it down: Alt text (short for alternative text) is like a secret doorway to accessibility. When users add alt text to the images they post on Facebook or any other social media platform that allows it, they’re essentially providing a description of the image. This description is then read aloud by screen reading software, allowing blind individuals to understand what’s happening in the image.
Now, here’s the catch: alt text is invisible to sighted users. It doesn’t clutter up the visual experience for them, but it makes all the difference for those blind people like us relying on screen readers. Imagine being able to “see” a photo through words—vivid descriptions that paint a mental picture.Anyways, enough of the explanation thing. I got a reply from them (please see the screenshot). I’m hopeful that they’ll follow through on their promise. And to all blind people who are following them or any other organization for persons with disability, most specially blindness organizations, let’s hold these organizations accountable. They are promoting inclusivity, so the small steps should be coming from them.
So, my message to the NCDA and to all my friends sharing images online, most specially blindness organizations promoting inclusivity (you know who you are), Let’s make our content truly inclusive! Adding alt text is a small but impactful step toward ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can fully engage with the content we put out there.

Opening up #patterntesting for my #emperorpenguin design!
Hello and welcome to my first attempt to get a pattern tested! Since I’m not sure how many testers will be interested, I don’t have a limit or a deadline as of now.
I can’t pay anyone, so what you’ll get for testing is the completed pattern in PDF form for free - and if I ever have to update the pattern, I’ll send you those updated versions as well. I’ll also thank you personally in the pattern listing, either with your username on mastodon or any other name you’d rather I use.
I haven’t posted the pattern anywhere yet. If you agree to be a tester, I will privately send you a link to a google doc. If you have an account on ravelry.com, I'll also send the tester code for my draft so you can link a project to it.
How I’d like this to go:
1. Testers email me at [email protected] to let me know they want to test (having it all there will make it easier for me to handle).
2. I send you the link (and the tester code if applicable).
3. You share any questions or criticisms you have about the pattern so I can change it if needed.
4. Once all is completed, I send you the finished PDF.
5. Testers upload your project + pictures with the tester code (if applicable).
6. I upload the pattern with thanks to anyone who tested in the description.
7. If you don't post on Ravelry, you can post pics here on Mastodon and link to the pattern after I've uploaded it.I hope I’m doing this right! I’ll answer any questions here or through email. (But my carpal tunnel is flaring up so it may be a few hours from now.)
