I've just dabbled in alternative processes in the past, but I'm well aware of the intricacies involved in the method, from the creation of a #digitalNegative, to the preparation of emulsion, developer and toner solutions. It's no walk in the park, and Karsten has done an outstanding work, a true wizard of the art.
Thank you @toxi !

Just received the #kallitype @toxi has done from one of my photos. Oh wow! Such a beautiful thing! I'm impressed by its qualities, the level of detail it shows even in the deeper shadows and lighter tones, the richness in it's tonality and the slight, almost imperceptible, warm hue.

In other news, my first 15x11" (roughly DIN A3) print came out with only minor issues, none of them show stoppers and I know what needs to be done to improve. So this is just a test print and it's a bit hard to capture, but the overall presence & level of detail is so amazing at this size! Hard to go back to smaller sizes now :)
To get here, I've been doing countless tests of different recipes and hardware (e.g. I had to disassemble my UV light to create a more uniform/unfocused light cone). Developing at larger sizes also means 2-3x more volume of liquids required to fill the processing trays. That means warming up the developer is quite a bit more time consuming and requires a larger beaker, larger bottles for storing other liquids etc. I think the result is all worth it though! 🤩
The original image of this print is here (taken three weeks ago):

How does pH affect anthotype pigments? Mariam Matta explores faster, higher-contrast anthotypes by testing plant pigments, alcohol thinners, and toners to find combinations that improve detail, contrast, and exposure times and shares the result here:

My nervousness is rising & palpable... The new transparencies arrived and I'm currently printing the digital negative for my first 11x15 inch (28x38 cm) kallitype. The amount of detail should be incredible at this size. Already mixed & topped up all chems/solutions, exercised my brushing skills (for applying emulsion)... The first large(r)-format printing session happening later tonight (after some Kelly Kettle evening coffee to celebrate the return of spring)...

It's packaging time... archival parchment pouches, book binder's cardboard, linen tape, acid-free stickers.
(This is a print made for @pyrenaicus. For my own images, you'd also get a certificate of authenticity included...)

The saga continues... and the new tone curve is now almost perfect too! 🤩 Kallitype has such small value ranges for both dark shadows and (even more so) in the upper highlights, so it's quite tricky trying to retain as much detail as possible in bright low-contrast situations. To retain more fine control, also chemically, I've started experimenting with 4x weaker/diluted contrast agent, which allows me to vary the number of drops mixed in and thus avoiding (to some extent) having to re-print expensive negatives for just tiny changes to highlights.

The quest for the perfect print is ongoing...
(Doing a print swap with @pyrenaicus and this wonderful image is one of his and I want to give it my best! So over the past 2 weeks I've been going through different variations, whilst also updating and re-calibrating my workflow, curves & equipment... still some more to try out!)

@thereisnocat Do you know the wavelength of your UV light? If your lows aren't getting dark enough in such a long time, it might indicate your UV light's wavelength isn't optimal. 365nm is supposedly best, but I found it harder to find decent options. So mine are 385nm (40W) and 395nm (200W) and the corresponding exposure times and distances are only: ~1:45min (4 inch) and ~2:40min (16-20 inch). For the latter, I initially also used a sheet of paper to diffuse the light more (for larger prints), but that extended the exposure time to ~17mins for not any noticeable difference...
(Btw. This is all for kallitype, but should equally apply for salt)

What is the best tool for digital negatives? Many artists struggle with making digital negatives. Luckily, several people offer systems to help. Which is best depends on your preferences, but I can point you to them.

Solarization: Most digital photographers only know the effect as Photoshop filter, but here it's happening chemically in the darkroom... Created by extreme overexposure (here ~3x longer of my usual exposure time), the darkest parts of the image have become inverted, which in Kallitype then (temporarily) turns into these amazing orange tones, whilst the mids & highlights remain normal neutral grays, depending on developer used... During fixing and (especially) toning, the orange would then revert back into a more or less uniform dark brown and the effect disappears again, replaced by the classic overexposed look... Aesthetically though, the early & in-between stages are the most unique and interesting...

Update, and third time's a charm... Smoother, sharper, better range and much less graininess. Actually can clearly make out the summit cross (maybe not in this phone pic and downsized JPG version)... 🤩

The experiments, process adjustments and elimination of environmental factors shall continue until the desired results are obtained (and morale improves again... 😅)
Also, Kallitype chemistry is a wondrous/finicky beast and reproduction requires strict discipline, cleanliness and detailed log keeping of pretty much any aspect... The main difference between these two prints is that the red one involved spraying/misting the paper with distilled water 15 mins prior to coating the emulsion... Almost looks like there was some contamination (i.e. tap water residue) in the spray head...
The bottom one is very close to what I'm after in terms of tones and also shows that my overall process is now pretty reproducible (if I just stick to it!).
