I'm about halfway through the new oral history of Canadian smartypants art-punk band Nomeansno, and it's probably the most exhaustive book of its type I've ever plowed into. While definitely a hoot for terminal fans, the 300+ pages may be a steeper climb for the merely curious. Author Jason Lamb traces the roots of the band all the way back to the respective members' childhoods and threads the needle through early gigs and recording sessions, signing to Alternative Tentacles, endless side projects, run-ins with skinheads, touring Europe with The Ex, and so on. No stone left unturned, and no detail left unresearched. It's really nice looking for a punk band bio, with tons of archival photos and gig flyers to spare. Applause!

I bought Nomeansno's "Small Parts Isolated & Destroyed" in 1988 on the strength of a review in a local fanzine. I immediately brought it to the house of a local criminal/aspiring acid casualty I was friends with it, and we listened to it for hours in his crumbling, mouse-infested basement. Not too many things I loved in 1988 hold up as well as this record does, but despite the many years of mileage I've given it, I can only assume the inner sleeve yellowed like that as a result of something it was exposed to in that basement.
