Uncertain times ahead for #Somalia
As promised by president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud when he was elected 4 years ago, Somalia’s constitution has been finalized — nearly 14 years after a provisory text came into force.
To get there, he has had to prioritize state-building and this end goal over fighting the Shabaab and over a precarious status quo in relations between the federal level and Somali states.

#AlShabaab has been pushed back at some — still uncomfortably short — distance of the capital, allowing for the first OPOV local elections to occur there since 1969 (Dec 2025). There is no reason for rejoicement in Central #Somalia however, especially given the reduced number of troops for #AU mission AUSSOM and #US refusal to fund the same (ca. 25%).

2026 is going to be a decisive and dangerous year for Somalia on all fronts.
Even as the #US disengage on aid, ban travel for Somalis (June 2025 & 14 January) and called it “barely a country” (Dec 2025), they’ve also stepped up airstrikes against both #IslamicState and #AlShabaab targets, a trend that should still amplify in 2026.

Dec 22, 2025In December, Puntland’s Police Force Criminal Investigation Department also released an official report into Abdullahi’s killing that contradicted the #US military’s claim that he was an #AlShabaab operative, a justification used for the strike. The issuance of the report pointed to unease within elements of the security establishment over the killing.
The report, which was submitted to both the Attorney General and Supreme Court of Puntland, found that he had “no criminal record” and was not “under any investigation” by Puntland security or investigative agencies—explicitly challenging the US assertion that the strike had killed an al-Shabaab operative.
